Do the liberal thing while your young, I did and I had a blast. The liberal chicks give it up easier because of the lack of respect for themselves and wanting to go against their parents and stuff. Gotta love those liberal sluts. Plus it takes all that preasure off of yourself because you can blame eveyone else for your own problems and responibility can be left to others as well. "Society" is a great thing to blame everything on when you're living the lefty life, try to remember that when you're sporting your Che shirt that you dropped $25 bucks on because the hippy chicks find him "dreamy" (JAG find him dreamy as well you know). Enjoy yourself, because that's what's most important to any lefty.~D

Liberalism strives for maximized liberty; it gets fuzzy when you talk about how that liberty is secured. One can have conservative ideals and be a liberal, e.g. someone may beleive promiscuity is bad while allowing others to be promiscuous. Similarly one can be promiscuous w/o forcing others to be promiscuous.
"Society" is a great thing to blame everything on when you're living the lefty life
Liberals who champion positive rights, things like affirmative action, are not representative of all liberals; that is a corruption of the word. Leaning "left" is not equivilant to being liberal, and leaning "right" isn't equivilant to being conservative. Conservatism is generally opposed to progressivism.

Now in all seriousness - changing your political and social views because you have learned new things - is part of maturing as a human being. The only point I would make is find the political and social views of the world that fit how you think and feel. Allow yourself to grow and mature in the way that makes you feel good about yourself (the rest of us are not important) - the overall philosophy you must take in life is the one that makes you who you want to be.
As for the unflatering ways of conservatives - there are many of them. Just like there are unflatering ways of those who have any philosophy. If you take the extreme positons in everything - you end up not liking yourself in the end.
Now when you debate your idealogue views - many different things can happen - you might take the hard line stance, or you might even soften your view in the discussion. In the end it is you who must be happy with your outlook on life, politics and society - not anyone else.

Okay, now that you have crossed the border into the left side of the world, maybe it's time to distinguish between the very different points of view the left offers.
Socialism:
Division of wealth, giving money to the poor, unemployment payouts and all that. Pretty much the most hated form of leftism in the US afaik. I like the free healthcare and free education stuff, the rest is too expensive imho.
'Green' liberalism
Save the trees ! Plant more trees ! I'm sorry but you can't farm here because it would be bad for the trees ! Kyoto is great !
IMO pretty much the opposite of what liberalism is supposed to be, telling people things they can't and shouldn't do. A lot of people trapped in this ideology are quite wealthy I've noticed, and they usually think OTHER people shouldn't do certain things.
True liberalism (TM)
Essentially allowing people to do whatever they want in the privacy of their won home, and giving as much freedom as possible in the rest of the world. Economically concerned about the 'true' cost of actions (like pollution) and making people pay that cost (very hard to calculate). There are two main problems with this idealogy. First, total freedom is hard to accomplish, since many people want many different things and there might be conflicting interests.
Second, it's hard to say what the true cost of some actions is (like pollution, electricity, cutting down trees, etc).
Most liberal views include elements from all three idealogies, to a lesser or greater extent.
Enjoy your stay on the left side ~

Well just look where your country is now. I'm no expert, but it sure seems to me as though your country took a very steep dive towards being a second class power on the world stage after World War II. Too much Liberalism.
I think you will find that the decline of Britain might just have something to do with bancruptcy caused by fighting two world wars and the loss of its money making base (the empire) . bugger all to do with liberalism GC.
Tribesman
11-29-2005, 19:39

11-29-2005, 20:48
Well who's fault is that? Maybe Britain ought to have stayed out of World War I, and left France to it's fate.Gah! Britain's continental policy has always been crystal clear: to ally herself with whomever opposes the nation trying to gain hegemony on the continent.
That meant finding allies against Spain/ Habsburg in the 16th, against France in the 17th and 18th, and in the 19th century, since 1870, against Germany .
There was no such thing as Britain rescuing France in 1914. It was well-understood self-interest by Britain. A German victory over France would've spelled the end of the British Empire by German hands.
That doesn't mean that it was France who saved the British Empire on the Somme though. The fate of both relied upon the other, with near perfect parallel interests. The interest of France was best served by the survival of the British Empire :wall: ~:mecry:
, the interest of Britain by a Germany that was kept in check on the continent.
Nice. Left is the way of Satan.
Maybe you should take a tour of true north, Strike, to see leftism in action.

Never mind Sjakihata, he is a young fellar and have been brought up with liberal pillows under his arms. The dense air in the lowlands has brought insanity to their language. He is probably not aware of the fact that Canada is spelled Kanada in all of the Scandinavian languages; yes, even in Danish. That they allow C’s is probably due to the fact of declining quality among today’s language teachers.

If some primitive Homo Sapiens wouldn't have left Africa many thousands of years ago, you wouldn't be having this discussion anyway.
There would have been no 13 colonies if Britain hadn't colonised the east coast of North America. There would have been no USA if France hadn't helped the colonials in their struggle and, more importantly, hadn't forced Britain to focus on a more important enemy. And there most likely wouldn't have been a free Britain or France if the USA hadn't helped out in both World Wars. Fait Accompli.

That's like saying a murderer is to thank for his own capture, because he commited the crime in the first place.
~:joker:
Nope it's to say that another murderer is to thank because he learned the police enough to catch this murderer. ~;p
Pointless right?
Do you know something else that I've find pointless? It's to even consider that a country owns your country for fighting a war, because it was an earlier alliance, when the stuff happened for more than 200 years ago.
It's to say that that country owes you because that you got involved in the same wars as the first one, because of thier own reasons (in WW1 because the Germans sank everything to Britain, even US passanger ships and in WW2 because of some Japanese bombings, thus dragged into it) and then comment things that have very little with reality to do (in WW1 did Germany declare war on France, because France was an ally to Russia, the French relationship with Serbia had nothing to do with it, the Russian relationship with Serbia however... And the losses (AKA people killed) in both WW:s for the US was about 600k, not even close to a million).
Sure, others have done it to in this thread and I still find it as pointless, but this one was commenting material.

I find it compulsively necessary to add that France suffered the largest percentage of population loss, of all the countries involved in World War 1... so, technically, I think we owe them on this one, for not getting involved earlier. ~;p

Dear o dear....Mr. Pedant is coming out to play again. Azimov although an excellent sci-fi authour was nothing to do with this story. 2001/10 comes from an Arthur C Clark short story in one of his anthologies, not Isaac Azimov. Dear o dear....~D
"Behind every man now alive stand thirty ghosts, for that is the ratio by which the dead outnumber the living. Since the dawn of time, roughly a hundred billion human beings have walked the planet Earth.
--Now this is an interesting number, for by a curious coincidence there are approximately a hundred billion stars in our local universe, the Milky Way. So for every man who has ever lived, in this universe, there shines a star."

That would make me all-wings, which I am definitely not...
Well, officially both blocks want freedom, justice, equal rights and peace, don't they? ~D ~:joker:
Joking aside, the left right probably originates from the ancient Greek democracy, where conservatives sat to the right and those wanting renewal sat to the left. It's a quite old concept which IMO can't be applied well to modern politics, but despite that, modern politics is mostly built up around it... I think today both sides want almost the same things, but the main difference is the methods used to get there. The left wing has oddly lost the "freedom" part of "equalité fraternité liberté" lately, which means modern left wing is more of what I described jokingly above, than the last alternative I described above, but true socialism with it's original ideals, is also considered left besides including freedom, which is now considered not a part of the left wing, so you can be left wing if you're socialist, even though modern left wing in many countries unfortunately is more of what I described above and doesn't follow the bottom alternative, but uses the name socialists ~ This confusion is one of the reasons I dislike the ordering of politics into left and right wings in this manner, but I'd probably say I prefer left wing personally, although the party in my own country is hard for me to like. Btw, environmental concerns are not considered parts of either left or right wing with the left right model... ~:handball:
2001/10 comes from an Arthur C Clark short story in one of his anthologies, not Isaac Azimov. Dear o dear....~D
Sorry, got my '50s and '60s prominent SF authors with Really Big Glasses mixed up. Mea maxima culpa.

If it wasn't for the USA, France would be flying the Hammer and Sickle right now.

To be honest, I just wanted to see which American member would bite first there ~;p

Oh please. They wasted their opportunity to have America be greatful for that. They turned around and started attacking our shipping not a decade after the war ended! Since then, the only thing France has done, that involved the US in any way, the hasn't cost of money, or thousands of dead soldiers, was the Lousiana Purchase.
Bravo, France. You sold us a large chunk of land. You gave us a boost during the revolution. You also violated the very soveriegnty you helped to create not a decade after it had seen victory, got yourself into two World Wars (Hey, France didn't have to honor it's alliance with Serbia. In fact, why the hell would they? France wanted war just as much as Germany did.) that have cost the US easily in the neighborhood of a million lives, cost us more money than I am sure I will ever see in my lifetime, or would even be capable of spending in my lifetime if for some reason I had it all before me!
No, no my friend. When you put the chips down, France owes us. And big time.
I personally think you're wrong. Even though they gave little help they gave help none the less. America had promiced to help France with a conflict with Britain. When they were fighting Britain later America decided to stay neutral. Smart, but very dishonorable.
I'd have to say it's old news now and neither we nor them owe any one anything, but we should have really lived up to a promice.
My two cents...

If some primitive Homo Sapiens wouldn't have left Africa many thousands of years ago, you wouldn't be having this discussion anyway.
