The reason I am asking is because I will not buy it if its just a hack 'n slash that you can win without the help of Allied AI. So, is there huge,:charge: open battles or are you by yourself most of the time?

To attempt to answer your question: It's really both Yes and No.

Yes, Spartan does have very large battles (not on the scale of Total War, but certainly vastly more enemies than I've seen in any other game of this type) And yes, although you are alone for some periods, you often have allies with you, and particularly in the early levels you sometimes fight alongside large numbers of allied Spartan warriors.

However you don't really "need help from the Allied AI" It's important to note that it isn't in any way a realism or "tactical" game - it's inspired by mythology, rather than history, and the protagonist is a legendary Achilles-esque figure who can single-handedly slaughter entire armies. So while there are allied characters and large battles, the emphasis is not on tactics and utilising teamwork to succeed or anything like that.

The game is probably a lot of fun but it's just not my type. If it was something like Diablo II, it might be more interesting but it's different. It's a game more like God of War. Not realistic at all and not much strategy but very fast paced. You press a lot of buttons and string up lots of attacks but you don't lead armies or anything. I think Spartan is made for more the casual gamer that wants to have fun right away. It's a pick up and play game. You don't have to learn a whole lot to play it. This means you can play for a few hours and make a lot of progress whereas with the Total War games you can spend lots of time just planning. It's not all about the fighting.
