The powerful ocean current that bathes Britain and northern Europe in warm waters from the tropics has weakened dramatically in recent years, a consequence of global warming that could trigger more severe winters and cooler summers across the region, scientists warn today
If the current remains as weak as it is, temperatures in Britain are likely to drop by an average of 1C in the next decade, according to Harry Bryden at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton who led the study
But, Hurrah for Britain, it seems:
Most of the cooling would be in the winter, so the biggest impact would be much colder winters," said Tim Osborn, of the University of East Anglia climatic research unit.
The final impact of any cooling effect will depend on whether it outweighs the global warming that, paradoxically, is driving it. According to climate modellers, the drop in temperature caused by a slowing of the Atlantic current will, in the long term, be swamped by a more general warming of the atmosphere.
Colder winters and warmer summers? Yes please.
Shame about Bangaldesh of course.

The Britsh isles with a diminished gulf stream , think of Newfoundland , but with more wind and rain .~;)

Well, you say that, but that's not what the scientists seem to be saying, which was what was interesting.

I love how global warming is supposed to be making things colder ~:snowman:
Gah! I 'just' read that it would not come a new ice age; and now this.
I love how global warming is supposed to be making things colder ~:snowman:
It seems to make it hotter and generally worse everywhere else, whilst western Europe gets slightly warmer/slightly cooler and otherwise stays pretty similar, allowing it to become the best place to be in the world.
I smell some sort of huge conspiracy...
So if Norway is becoming inhabitable we’ll have to find another place to stay.
Prepare for the Second Viking Age!!!
It is kind of funny; my co-workers and I sometimes discuss what we should do with our slush fund. One of them had the brilliant idea of buying land, you know, like USA did (Alaska).
The discussion is always where.
So far Cuba has been mentioned and diverse countries in Africa.
We would of-course invest in the nation, making it a little Norway with all the benefits. If Norway one day should be so cold and disgusting to live in, we could just move to little Norway, which of course has more than enough room for ca. 5 million Norwegians. Old Norway would be a place for harvesting resources, a playground for military exercises and all-year skiing etc.
My co-worker actually made a webpage called www.fylke20.no (http://www.fylke20.no/) to raise a movement in the people to support buying land with the slush fund. In writing moment the server is unfortunately down.
What about a huge exodus of Scandinavia, we all band together and buy/invade a poor country and build up our culture again from scrach.
Madagaskar... how about that piece of land, never hear anything about that place anyway! ~;)
Or western Australia.... nobody lives there.... ~D

I guess it would have to get _a lot_ colder for the Norwegians to be bothered... ~D

muhahaha, I was just kidding mate, but if the weather gets all crap, those western aussies better get ready to make some room! :charge:

IF you want warmth, come to Canada. Seriously. It was 13 degrees two days ago.

You did of course note what happened to the last Norwegian Viking er Ship Captain trying to get illegal immigrants into Western Australia. ~D
The SAS are based in WA, as are a lot of our sweet dainty miners. ~
Actually I think you guys would be welcomed... but NZ or Tasmania might be better choices in climate... but those who like white sand instead of snow... WA all the way. ~

On a completely different note, Norway is the third leading country in oil exports...
Curious isn't it?

Yeah, and everyone in Norway appreciate that, it changed us from being amongst the poorest countries in Europe to becoming one of the wealthiest contries in the world!

We`re exporting it, not using it. ~;)
Most of the energy we use comes from water falls; and btw, we are in the world lead when it comes to production of hydrogen, wich might become the fuel of future.

Let`s not forget that we`ve suffered from several unions... I think we`d did it fine without the oil, at least Denmark and Sweden does.

.
You still need a primary source to make it though.

Yeah, but there`s plenty of sources. Nuclear, wave, solar, waterfall and winde energy. Perhaps fusion too, if that becomes an energy source in the future.

A couple generations back, Norwegians made outposts in the US states of Wisconsin & Minnesota. Still pretty cold tho'. Maybe consider New Orleans area.

Most of Europe doesn't have the natural resources to make sufficient 'clean' energy, we'd become dependant on Norwegian power supply again...
Good news for Norway after all I guess ~
Wasn't Norway the richest country in the world already? (per inhabitant that is, of course).
Anyway, in respect to global warming, I seriously should be thinking about either moving east or taking more swimming lessons...

While you short-sighted lot were busy burning up the fossil fuels of the world - destroying the planet as you go and making yourself utterly dependent on the Arabs, Hugo Chavezes and, worse, Norwegians of this world - we developed the world's most advanced nuclear energy plants, now generating over 75% of our energy needs.
Soon, you will all be dependent on us. Not to worry though, you Belgians have been a modest, obedient people. We will supply you with some of our energy.

You already do, quite a bit of energy even. Add to that that our main power supplier (Electrable, privatized a couple of years ago) has been bought up by Suez, and that the government plans to stop using nuclear power (generated on our own soil) by 2015 and we're pretty definatly pwnd ~:mecry:
Wasn't Norway the richest country in the world already? (per inhabitant that is, of course).
Nah, I`ve heard we were among the richhest, but I believe the US or Japan got more money per inhabitant.
What Norway is though, according to the UN, it is the best country in the world to live in, and has been so since 2001.

Just a pity for you when the uranium reserves are empty...

Then you dig up the spent fuel rods and get the plutonium and unused U235. Nuclear waste dumps aren't dumps, they are future plutonium mines. Keep it going for a while longer
I wonder if this is trustworthy? (http://www-formal.stanford.edu/jmc/progress/) Oh well it works for what I want to know. Thorium can also be used in reactors.

Just wait till they have tamed Odinium; that will release a new paradigm within energy and weapons research. ~

It`s still gonna end though. We can stay under this sun for at least another 3 billion years, so I think that`s a better source of energy. It will actually increase in strenght over the next million(and billion) years, rather than being weakened.
