Ok people I need your game play experience...I'm playing the XL mod as the Volga Bulgars. My King is 56 years old and his only son, is under-age at 10. I'm in trouble and was wondering how old anyone’s King has got be. Has anyone had a king reach 66? Is it possible? All my men of royal blood are dead and having just beat off the Horde I’m desperate not to lose my kingdom

I call you all to arms :knight: (legs and heads too!)

you don't necessarily need to panic, i've had kings last well over 60 years, some even over 70 i think. there ought to be V&Vs specifically for elderly rulers, like 'False Teeth' or 'Warhorse replaced by Shop-rider' that kind of thing...

I've had Kings get into their 80's, and have read reports in other threads of even older rulers. Just save the game each turn before ending the year - if your King dies, reload and change something (Emmisaries, Spies, Assasins, Princesses, build queues, etc. - just about anything will do to change the random number generator seed).

It's cheesy, but far better than losing a good campaign due to infertility.

I once had a 82 years old king but in regular MTW without VI so I don't know if this will help. Just don't worry about it and save often. Or you can load to save some 20 years earlier and cheat to get a son.

This is good news, I've been worried that this was the end. thanks for the reponses so far.

Has anyone else had V&V for old kings?

You could always play as HRE, their kings are elected ~;) . This solves alot
of worrying.

Matteus was just joking. There are no age-dependend V&V's, though characters tend to accumulate vices with age. Also, I heard that a King in charge of a crusade will not die of natural causes. If you can put him in a crusade and stall it until the heir is of age, you are pretty sure the king will survive if he does not die in battle. Off course, this isn't really helpfull in your case, as I don't think the Bulgars can crusade.

I play VI and the king always pops off to Valhalla or Purgatory at age 56. Does the XL mod fix this and make it random? Do they ever die off earlier than 56 from something other than battle?

I also suffer from that problem. It's annoying to know when they're gonna die. It would be more fun if you could see him to be 100.

And there are no such vices as "false teeth" although his getting old could boost his acumen since he's wiser and more experienced. CA should consider this in the next game/expansion.

Do you have the last patch for M:TW/VI? IIRC, this was introduced with VI and fixed in the patch.

My record is a French King, 103 years old. Yes. Amazing. It was 2 1/2 years ago ~

If you reload enough times the turn he died, you may get the illusive instant reemergence.

Geeez! I'm glad this was game-related, I was all ready to console and comfort.

Anyways, death is random after a certain age so if you keep quick saving before you end a turn you can reload if he dies a few times until your son comes of age. It is a bit cheap but it is more fun than having your game end.

IIRC it seems that the non-catholic factions tend to have thier kings live to ripe old ages. I don't know if that's particularly done on,purpose, but that seems to be the pattern in my games. Though the one exception has been the Danes, whose king seem to live forever. I have had games where the sons have deen in their late 50's before taking the throne.

Actually no, all I've done is loaded MTW, then VI later. Actually, now that I remember...I did tweak it to have all Catholic factions able to Crusade. But, I haven't actually been sure how to download any thing like that. I am considering the XL mod. However, it you're talking of something different. Where do I find it and what do I do?

Also, I have to show a little ignorance......IIRC....I see that some around here....what does it mean?

Nope, it happened to me twice. My kings died of old age on their way to their destinations. Well, the main reason I put them in crusade was because I didn't care anymore if they died. It wasn't a loss really lol.

sorry Third spearman from the left, i was fooling about! oldest ruler i've ever had was an 83 year old Egytian Caliph, great stats and still leading armies from the comfort of his wheelchair!
i currently have a 54 year old Welsh king whose ONLY V&V is Magnificent Builder...he's been around for ages, but i've carefully protected him and not let him do anything naughty, hence the lack of any other traits. his heir is now about 49, and he had two older sons who were not very talented and whose hunting parties and scouting expeditions were sadly and unfortunately <ahem> 'betrayed' to the Saxons by some nefarious b*stard (er, me)...
i agree though, possible (serious) vice and virtues for increasingly aged rulers would be good, reflecting either an experienced statesman or a decrepit and dribbling loon with a long white beard. maybe you could institute a regency if the king got too gaa-gaa? historical precedents abound...i'd also like to have seen regencies if the heir is too young, although this usually led to civil war and much skullduggery.
maybe teching up to things like 'Physician's Guild' or 'The Discovery of Plumbing' should result in increased lifespan for generals and rulers? or maybe not, in the case of medieval plumbing, which was made of lead...!

a 54 year old Welsh king . . . his heir is now about 49.
He was, how to put this delicately, a precociously well developed young man?~

I've never had a King live far beyond 70, though I tend to play the Catholic factions so maybe there is a thread there as Emerald Wolf suggests.

I'd suggest that good vices are already there for Kings. Only the oldest Kings ever manage to become Magnificent Builders/Stewards etc etc. At least that's the way it plays out in my games.
It'd be nice to see the Autocrat and Statesman lines of V&Vs to be a bit more common though.

heheh, beats me! guess they start 'em young in the valleys.
yeah, i'd like to see those V&Vs more often too. a bit less boy-lovin' and a bit more ruling. still, it's the little foibles that make people interesting and give the game depth. i get quite attached to some of my generals, particularly the ones who go increasingly insane and develop endearing traits like frothing at the mouth, talking to imaginary green 3-legged monkeys and beating absolutely anything you put in front of them on a battlefield...

of course, they'd have to be imaginary, cos green 3-legged monkeys don't exist. do they?

ah, Lord Cadwallon the Barking Mad says they do. time for an appointment with the Clywd Home for the Terminally Cracked, i think. gibber.

I have a son!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But just in case the DSS are MTW fans its in game only. He is a 5 star general and a fine heir. I used the save and load idea and it worked really well, the king only died once (i'm only sleeping) before coming back to life. He is still going and I'll post his final age, so that you can all pay your respects.

matteus the inbred: I mis-read what you had said and got all excited waiting for my old timer V&V'S. ~:handball: I'm going to have a word with VH to see if something can be added to his XL mod,it was a great idea.

I'm also starting a new tread today so come post
