Has anyone else gotten this guy when you play as the English? Every campaign I play he comes up, usually about halfway through the Early period, he's always between a 5-7 star general and he's always leading a unit of FMAA. PLus he never appears when I'm traing troops on the British Isles, only when I train on the mainland.

I think I had that guy before. His birthyear is 1115. I don't know when he does appear though. He can appear in any England-owned provinces as he is set to appear anywhere in the defaultheroes.txt file.
Try to train just one unit in Wessex during his "appear-year" (since you seem to know).
Why is he called Strongbow Fitzgilbert when he leads FMAA? The name suggests he would be leading longbowmen.
I suppose the name is fixed, but the unit he´s assigned to is random.
Is there somewhere more info about the historic personalities you can get? Like, when and where can they appear, and perhaps some background infos?

I've had him 2 times. Once leading a unit of feudal spears ( made in mercia or Northumbria, the one with the +1 for billmen) and the other time he was leading FMAA from Normandy.
It could be that MAA are more likly to be a general than spears (Like pesants aren't usualy generals) but I could be wrong.

Indeed. Strongbow FitzGilbert is one of the many historical heroes M:TW includes. They appear at a set date (16 years after their birth date) when you construct a unit. I know of two heroes listings: Ky Kiske's heroes list (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=30538) (M:TW only) and Nefarious' M:TW info pack (contains the heroes, provinces and GA of M:TW & VI, but does not tell you what the heroes stats are). You can find Nefarious e-mail adress in Froggy's M:TW beginner's guide, AFAIK it cannot be found anywhere on the internet. For background info you might try wikipedia.

You are right, but the general appears in whatever unit is finished on the turn of his appearance. If multiple units are build, he pick the unit that is "preffered" for generals by the unit files.
I know about Nefarious´ info pack, the problem is, it´s kind of quite a while ago that he was active. So I was unsure whether to contact him, I thought that info was uploaded in some place or another. But it looks like I´ve got to give it a try and e-mail.
Ky Kiske's link isn't working. I guess it's old and been deleted or something. Could anyone else post up his heroes guide in here please?

Nefarious is from New Orleans and his home was pretty much destroyed, hence why he hasn't been online very often, aside from a couple of posts at the .c0mmie telling people that he and his family are ok.
Here's Nef's hero's list and is posted at the .c0mmie's (http://p223.ezboard.com/fshoguntotalwarfrm5.showMessageRange?topicID=12997.topic&start=21&stop=40) Numerology thread.

INTRODUCTION
The heroes within Medieval: Total War add a certain flare and color to the period. Some are well known by most, while others are completely unknown to all. In their time, however, these men and women truly affected the course of history through their deeds and ideals.
The contribution made by each is as varied as the factions in the game. There are robber barons, fearless glory-seekers, religious zealots, expert assault specialists, and bloody psychopaths, to name but a few. However, each trait can be used to your advantage within the game; especially if you know ‘who shows up when’. To this end, the following list has been compiled. The data used comes from the MTW files with VI loaded and patched to v2.01.
HEADINGS
Name: The hero’s name, as listed in the MTW files. The spellings are taken from the files, so the Scot Hero ‘William Wallace’ is actually ‘William Walays’.
Year: The year in which the Hero is born. This is good to know, as you can anticipate the arrival of an outstanding Army Leader/General in 16 years. Just like a Prince or Princess, you must wait for Generals to mature. If a hero’s year is listed before 793 in VI or before 1087 in MTW, then you should expect to see them upon starting the game. Otherwise, they should appear as soon as you train them.
Example: The French have Hugh de Cluny, an Inquisitor arriving in 1024. Since he appears before 1087, the first Inquisitor trained by France will be Hugh de Cluny.
Type: Tells you what they are. This could be a General, Emissary, Inquisitor, etc. Note that this column does not apply to Rebels or any VI factions. **** NOTE: All Rebels and VI faction Heroes are GENERALS. ****
Region: This column applies to REBELS ONLY. Rebels appear where listed, but specific faction heroes will appear anywhere within that faction.
Example: If you train any Assassin as the English after 1190 anywhere in your kingdom, you will get Guy of Gisbourne as your next Assassin.
V&V:[ Note that some non-general units are listed as having V&Vs, but this feature was not implemented in the game - Motorhead ] The starting Vice or Virtue of the hero. A few have no starting V or V and have a blank space in this column. I must admit that this listing was the most difficult. The files from which this document was compiled have listings such as ‘Bad Attacker2’ and ‘Zealot4’. It took quite some time to decipher and match these with the in-game descriptions. I’m about 98% sure that I have them right. If, however, a vice or virtue is slightly off during game play…give me a break. The listing will still give you a general idea of what type of hero you’re getting.
FOOTNOTES [ I didn't include the footnotes, but they can be found in MTW/campmap/names/ directory - Motorhead ]
There are some historical ‘blurbs’ about the heroes within the .txt files. At the end of each faction, these have been added, numerically. Not much is known about some, while others are quite famous. There are no footnotes for the VI era heroes. These footnotes have been included to give you a slight glimpse into the hero’s real life. Perhaps someone is about to emerge in your faction that you could use as a good General. By the same token, perhaps the AI has some Inquisitor that bares careful watching. Use the information to your advantage.

Once again, a load of thank to Nefarious for putting together the original list.
I think the Egyptian Inquisitor is a typo for Alim.
He was a Norman border baron on the welsh frontier. He was the leader of the Norman mercenary faction that was brought to Ireland by Dermot McMurrough to reclaim the Kingdom of Leinster.
As I understand it, most Knights would have been handy with a bow, this guy especially, hence the moniker, but he was definetley a bonafide Norman Knight.
Thanks folks, appreciate it.

This is a pretty good list, and Rocket Boy does some 'splaining after the listings as to who the people were.
Nice link. But where´s Saladin (Yussuf ibn Ayyub), I thought he was a hero in the campaign as well ~ Then again, Richard the Lionhearted, Frederick II and Edward the black prince are missing in the campaign as well.
And wasn´t Nur al`Din Saladin´s uncle? I think I read so. Btw, according to the same source, Saladin was a Kurd from Tikrit.
I liked this one, however:
"William","Walays", 1272, # 5,4,3,2,7, fearsome3, GENERAL,ID_SCOTLAND, -1 //Mel Gibson
,
"TomNs","de Torquemada",1420, 1,7,5,4,7, prisoner_killer3, INQUISITOR, ID_LIMBO, -1 //Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition and
"Vlad", "Tepes", 1430, 3,7,2,4,0, butcher, GENERAL, ID_LIMBO, -1 //Christopher Lee ~:joker:
Which Dracula movie has Christopher Lee staring, by the way?

Dracula, Prince of Darkness (1966), but he was in at least five more!
i read a very good biography of Saladin recently...Nurreddin (or Nur-ad'din...or Nur-al'din!) was Saladin's overlord, but his uncle was Shirkuh, who preceded Saladin as Vizier of Egypt.
haven't tried the campaign stuff yet, must give it a go.

According to the old discussion Richard, Saladin and Barbarossa appear as royals, not regular heroes. Al Nasir is Saladin. Richard I is..well, Richard Lionhearted (see vice&virtue) and Frederick II is Frederick Barbarossa. It's also mentioned in those links above.
I've found some info about Richard "Strongbow" Fitzgilbert.
He was an english campaigner in Ireland anmd subsquently became the Irish king ! Take a look.

Nope, King of Leinster. He married Mc Murrough's daughter and was adopted as heir.

Leinster (Laighin or Laigin in irish) is the eastern province of Ireland, facing across the Irish sea towards wales. it has the capital of the republic of Ireland, Dublin, in it.

Take a look there, show the political disposition around 1100, before the Normans arrived.

Well, it is a historic map of Northwest Europe, so that would make sense.
But if you want to see their other maps, click on the little icon with the A in the upper left hand corner.
Also, I have a question.
Is it Strongbow as in Bow and Arrow or Taking a bow after a good performance? Or maybe he liked to wear bows in his hair, and if you laughed at them he'd punch your lights out.

Or perhaps he was a shipbuilder!
[...] and Frederick II is Frederick Barbarossa. It's also mentioned in those links above.
Er, no, Frederick Barbarossa (1122 - 1190) was Frederick II´s (1194 -1250) grandfather. Frederick II was the emperor who got excommunicated three times, among other things for conquering Jerusalem without the Pope´s permission or killing Saracens.
I'm pretty sure it was the bows in the hair. He was teased by all the other Normans, that's why he was so eager to go to Ireland.
Yeah, Barbarossa was the one that drowned in a river in Cilicia, he was the first Frederick to be Emperor.
And just to prevent us from beinf shipped off to a Monastery, AFAIK, there are Hofenstaffen heroes in the HRE, you can change the line over from the Karolingians with a Civil War if you're careful. I never managed to find Barbarossa though.

I am not exactly sure how it works, but Hero King's have got a separate file. If you have a prince born around the same time as the hero and with the same name, he will share characteristics with this hero. But I have never seen an English Richard that was worthy of the title Lionheart. Mind you, that may have been because they had the misfortune of facing me  .

I have wondered about that too. Perhaps it is so people will develop them some?

Ciaran, well, that was my mistake. Get rid of the roman numeral and it will make sense lol.
Begin training royal knights at 114, so come 1115 you have an über immortal general.

I meant I was trying to get a Hofenstaffen general called Frederick (I can't remember if it's actually a surname, I might of added it, I did add names to Ireland and Scotland in XL anyway.), become King through civil war.
I was a little unclear, sorry.

No, I misread your post. My mistake  .
I recall that, after a civil war the name of the royal line stays the same, but I could be wrong. It has been a while since I played the game (though lack of time and troubles with my speakers; if anybody could help me out in the Tech Library (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=24107&page=7#post1000996) I would be very grateful...)
I think if you start in High era, the surname of the HRE imperial family is Hohenstaufen. So the name might depend on the starting era.
