In other news, a number of people around the world were found dead in front of their computers today, with the same website displayed on each computer.
The website was a internet chat room for what appears to be a modification of a popular video. Investigators believe, however, that this may be the front for a internet based suicide ring.
"Looking back in the history of this forum, it seems clear to me that the people behind this game were really just sadistic individuals who got the victims dependent on 'updates' of the game, " said FBI investigator Louis Freeh, who went on to explain that a certain message about the cancellation of the game may have been the prearranged signal for people to commit suicide.
A mother of one of the victims, who asked not to be identified, demanded to know why access to such sites wasn't more severely restricted.
"How is it that a child of any age can access these violent video game sites, where people find happiness in slaughtering thousands of people in a virtual world, burning and razing cities?" the mother asked. She has also stated that she intends to start an organization to prevent such things from happening again, insisting, "We must stop these evil 'modification teams' who torment our children and get them to commit suicide as part of the game!"
A FBI investigation into these events is ongoing.

It didnt stop me useing my rotating sig since the link wasnt direct to a image. It was linked to the php script that controls my many sigs and so the forum wasnt able to tell what size the image it was being linked to was.

.Do you have a server with Apache? If so, then I can tell you that what you want is the mod_rewrite module, although beyond that I have no idea.
Anyway, for the time being, you could always 1) change the image links to point to images on your webspace (or Photobucket) that don't exist, updating your sig links at the same time, then 2) upload the images you want to the names you put in. At step 1, the board script should try to check the images, find they don't exist, and so let them through. TWC used to have a script that checked sig size for every post and then automatically removed it if it was found to be in violation—from what you've said, it seems the Guild has the much less reliable method of only checking when you change your sig, and so this will work.
(Of course, even the method TWC used to use can be overcome with mod_rewrite, specifically by determining which IPs are being used to check the image size and then sending a different image to those IPs than to anyone else. But that's out of the reach of most users. The only surefire way to stop images from being too big is to require them to be uploaded to the site server.)
Edit: Damn, seems like Junior Members can't link to external sites in their sig. I was going to do a demonstration (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/member.php?u=14905). ~:(

<?php
$folder = '';
$exts = 'jpg jpeg png gif';
$files = array(); $i = -1; // Initialize some variables
if ('' == $folder) $folder = './';
$handle = opendir($folder);
$exts = explode(' ', $exts);
while (false !== ($file = readdir($handle))) {
foreach($exts as $ext) { // for each extension check the extension
if (preg_match('/\.'.$ext.'$/i', $file, $test)) { // faster than ereg, case insensitive
$files[] = $file; // it's good
++$i;
}
}
}
closedir($handle); // We're not using it anymore

$rand = mt_rand(0, $i); // $i was incremented as we went along

It will most definatly have bugs, we're trying to catch all the one's will crash people's games on a regular basis (we had a CTD that would let you get past the first turn when the first version of .7 was done). You folks can help us find the irregular ones once we get this damn thing out the door (trust me I want to release it as bad as you want us to).
I think release the OB will do that many people know your works and try to help you to fix theese problems and others can be in the future.
It´s a beta, no? Dont worry if there is some bugs, it´s normal.
At the present, how many companies release perfect full games? They usually sell us the games with many bugs and after release the fix patches.
As has been stated, we're not trying to release it 'perfect'. More 'playable'. A series of very large bugs that we already know of have rendered the campaign unplayable due to CTDs. We don't need help finding them, we just need to fix them, and continue to the next major CTD bug, and so on. Once the major CTD bugs are out of the way, the game will be playable, and likely have quite a number of smaller bugs, omissions, and errors that we can then correct at a more liesurely pace.
Reverend Joe
12-19-2005, 17:14
Trust me, you don't want to play this version yet. I mean, I can understand having to put up with bugs here and there, but some of these bugs are pretty bad. I mean, game-killer bad. On the up-side, however, we are veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery close to removing them; we are down to the last internal build, so just have a little more patience.
But, then again...
Maybe...
Just maybe...
We aren't going to release it at all. :devilish:
But, then again...
Maybe...
Just maybe...
We aren't going to release it at all. :devilish:
good one. gnah gnah.
What if we let just one game killing bug in it and let the fans fix them. Less work for the bug hunters and fixers who can take brake.
Because then whiners will come out of the woodwork, complaining about the mod crashing the game all the time, and then whine more about how we should've fixed it before release. This is pre-emptive avoidance of whining that would be far more irritating than current whining, because it'd be whining about something we gave them. This way, at least the whining is mildly justifiable because we've been baiting the poor innocents forever. And I don't much care for taunting them with cancellation scares. It's enough to incite more complaining.
Uh... you do know I am a member of EB... right?
Yeah. Incase you didn't notice, I was kidding :san_wink:
It is rather obvious of all the whiners who would appear as it would be very dramatic to go for like 10 turns without saving and say "Hey, really freaking game. I already have myself a good empire. Lemme save before this...Oh, what a cool rebel unit. Lemme see the description *Right clicks*
*Unknown Error has occurred, Rome: Total War will now exit.*
And we'll be like "Damn...So much work for nothing"
Of course there's always those pluses which are people who after that "Damn." Come to the forum whining which such a bug wasn't fixed and on how it ruined their life beyond repair.
I'm pretty sure that's what they are trying to avoid.

We could read them and find those small "features":san_grin: that seem to be unavoidable. Or maybe you have profesional correctors in team? If yes, then let us read that great stuff and learn some english. :san_grin:
This will allow some of us to start playing just after OB is out instead of spending hours on reading :san_tongue:
This might sound dumb, but what exactly does "CTD" stand for?
Crash to Desktop. Basically it occurs an error which ends the game.
Crash-to-Desktop; a bug that causes the game to cease suddenly. They're irritating, and some very large ones are in our current version.
And I don't much care for taunting them with cancellation scares. It's enough to incite more complaining.It was amusing. They found it amusing. The spam threads are what people are complaining about. :san_wink:

I don't see what all the opposition to spam is for. It's good and wholesome, besides being delicious. Do you know that some people like spam so much that they set up a musem to it? Check it out: http://media.hormel.com/templates/knowledge/knowledge.asp?id=9&catitemid=16
But at the same time I can see that the repetitive nature of spam must be a real pain in the backside. Eventually you become full, and try to push the spam away, but people keep popping up offering you more! When will this 'spamming' process end?
To be fair to purveyors of spam, EB has brought it on itself to some extent. I'm not saying that they're totally responsible; there will always be diehard 'spammers'. However, you have always quite deliberately tried to provoke curiosity and play around with the minds of your fans (take a look at the title of this thread). That's just encouraging them.
At any rate, I'm being patient...
