dont know a lot about the russian city, but a few tidbits about nome, alaska for ya.

The City of Nome was incorporated on April 9, 1901 and operates under the Council-Manager form of government. The Nome Common Council consists of 6 elected officials and a Mayor, as the presiding officer.

45 full time employees, supplemented with seasonal employees, serve 3,505 Nome residents. The 2004 General Budget is $7.9 million, and the Port budget is $671,000. The 2004 mil rate for Nome is 11 mils, and the City has a 5% sales tax (as of October 10, 2003) as well as a 4% hotel/motel tax.

The Nome Joint Utility Systems, owned and operated by the City of Nome, serves the community with electrical, water, and sanitation services. The Nome Public Schools also operates under the City, providing the children of Nome with a first class education in grades Kindergarten - 12th.

Nome is the hub of the Seward Peninsula region. Local, State, and Federal government services provide the majority of employment. Retail services, transportation, mining, medical and other businesses provide year-round income.


and now for the most relavent fact for this bridge decision, their are only two ways in and out of nome, air, and sea. thats it their road system doesnt connect to anything.

the nearest city that connects to alaskas highway system is fairbanks, ak and if memory serves me correctly thats a 800 to 900 mile straight shot, a highway connecting them would be longer, because the terrain between the two cities has mountain ranges, rivers, bogs and marshes that would need to be avoided in the highway plan...

another point that makes me question this, is alaska is in an earthquake zone, we have an average of one a day up here at least, most are minor, but what if another big one hits, what will that do to the tunnel
