View Full Version : make up
Hey,
This is for a paper.
I need information about make up around the 15th /17th century.
Or better, where I can get that information.
I tried the library at the univ. but that only gave me information about how it was produced (ingredients) and stuff.
What I need is actual info on the style, the people who wore it etc…
Any ideas?
Maybe I don’t use the correct vocabulary to find the info that is needed?
What would also be good advice is maybe a subject.
The task is: find a fashion subject around the time period given above.
It speaks for itself that it must be a little original.
I know sh... about fashion.
So any help would be most welcome.
Assumedly, this is about European cosmetics in the time period? Well, they were a luxury, so plebs didn't use it. Depending on your definition, both men and women used makeup, whether it's powdered wigs or powdered rouge.
Great Neon that gives me enough for the title:san_undecided:
You know I'm your mang, mang. Have you tried Wiki?

Here's what I know. This concerns the make-up used in the early Georgian (early 18th Century) era, so it may be too late for you? Oh well, here goes:
Guide (for women) to looking sexy in Georgian Britain.
Paleness is beautiful. Use a white lead paint to make your skin pale. (The lead is poisonous, but most make-up was at this time).
To cover your smallpox scars - or just to have beauty spots - cut some silk into tiny circles and stick the circles to your face.
Lipstick hasn't been invented yet. Instead, use red Plaster of Paris.
Shave your eyebrows off. Now catch a mouse. Use the skin as false eyerbrows. Also get hold of some black lead and use this on your eyebrows (kinda like mascara).
Sweet chubby faces are all the rage with men at this time. To improve your face, hold cork balls in your cheeks.
Wigs. The bigger your wig, the more fashionable you are.
What's a wig without accessories? Never wear your wig plain. Decorate it with parrot feathers, ribbons, fruit, flowers or whatever takes your fancy.
Wide skirts and long trains are the fashion. Wear a satin dress, with a corset. (Sorry! They're painful, so I hear).
Handbags are a nice accessory. Don't forget your vinegar, perfume and some snuff to clear your head.
Last of all, you'll need a fan.
Now, you're able to pull in Georgian Britain. Get out there! :san_kiss:
