Thought this might be interesting. Which game (PC) are most looking forward to in 2006? On the other side what game will you be avoiding? What are you unsure about?

I personally am looking forwar to Lord Of The Rings: Battle For Middle Earth II. From what I've read it seems good and worth a buy. There is not really a game I will be avoiding, however I would very much like to know more about Rise Of Legends, the concept seems intruiging but then again will it just be all graphics? My plan on this will be to wait on public reaction to it after release, may or may not buy it.

Star Wars: Empire at War (http://www.lucasarts.com/games/swempireatwar/indexFlash.html)

Cool. It's a strategy game like Total War. Unfortunately, it's missing something that Total War games have; lots of bodies lying on the battlefield. In addition to that, I'd like to see some distinctive characters with different abilities like in KOEI's Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Star Wars has some, like Darth Vader, but I think the generals look the same. I hope there are some good movies or interaction with the characters in close up too.

I'd like to have some first person playing added to the game, but the strategy part is good enough.

Hmm... haven't really thought - my current laptop's 3 years old, so nothing new works anymore - Rome just about limps by.

But I hear rumours I might be getting a new beast to work with - so might have to give some recent releases a whirl... Anything with pixel shader requirements for example.

I dunno - if a new Flashpoint comes out... kekvitirae - know anything about that?

Plus - want to give B&W2, Thief III, Rome on max settings... etc. etc. a good goingover.

Assuming it even makes it out in 2006, the big one for me is the new Battle of Britain flightsim from Oleg Maddox, the guy who created the Il2 series of flight sims.

Also, there's going to be another exapnsion pack for the present Il2 series released in 2006, and it's going to have Mosquitos in it! :trytofly: Yeah baby!

Napoleonic Total War II mod for RTW

Blue Lotus mod for RTW

Star Wars: Empire At War (?)This one I am wondering about. The scale issues (e.g. for the sake of gameplay some units may be much larger or smaller than they really should be) could be a problem for me.

Over Flanders Fields mod for Combat Flight Simulator 3 (Available in a week(!), but I probably won't get to it until next year.)http://off.oldbrowndog.net/

Warhammer: Mark of Chaos

Galactic Civilizations II: The Dread Lords

Somewhat surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet...Dunegons and Dragons Online anyone? It looks like it will definitely eliminate any farming, though it unfortunately remains to be seen if a MMORPG can last without requiring tedious work (without the farming the game would just be over quickly).

My list at the moment:

Civilisations Rise and Fall - mercifully rescued by Midway for a 2006 release after their developers went under. More fun with the ancients!

Commandos Strike Force Very tactical WWII squad FPS/RPG mix which is more like Hidden and Dangerous mixed with a bit of COD, but a lot more intelligent than COD!

Company of Heroes - Looks to be the next generation for WWII RTS graphically, but no idea what the gameplay will be like yet.

WWII RTS - If it ever comes out. Likely to be the most historically accurate WWII tank battle RTS of 2006

Battlestations Midway - WWII RTS set in the Pacific theatre. I would get it just for the naval battles which look superb close up.

Otherwise, Oblivion baby! Head forth the save the emperor of Tamriel! (I hope there would be a mod to allow me to be one, kind of like a reverse to the mod to allow me to not be the Nerevarine.)

Oh, and then there's Twilight Princess, and hopefully, Metroid Prime 3. I'll have to wait until E3 to see if that comes out in 06 or 07 though.

On the PC front, I'm looking forward to Quake Wars, Warhammer and Huxley.

9.Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

- patches and upgrades for Strike Fighter: Project 1 and Mount & Blade

- Armed Assault

- Age of Pirates

- Windows Vista(yes, I am really looking forward to it)

- Hammer & Sickle

- Act of War: High Treason

- maybe Gothic 3

- maybe War on Terror

and I´m curious what other good games may come out, though I´m not very optimistic, the trend towards arcade is too big IMO.

And it´s about time for a new TW game to be announced I think.:balloon2:

Yes, I must now add Medieval 2 to my list as well! I am more cautious with my optimism this time around, however. I will *not* make the mistake with this game that I did when Rome came out, which was me and my roommates charging into the local game store to buy a copy on the day of its release. ~

If CA can rectify the problems they had with Rome (particularly the AI, diplomacy, faction balance, and all the major bugs), though, I think it's safe to say I will be spending an inordinate amount of time fighting across Europe and the Middle East this Thanksgiving. ~

For me, there's only one must-buy: Guild Wars Factions. The others are "possibly nice" games along the lines of MTW2, Oblivion, GalCiv2, Sup Commander, Dominions 3, Space Empires V, NWN2 etc, but I'll wait for reviews and community reactions before buying.

econ21
01-23-2006, 14:46
Crandeleon - what's the attraction of Guild Wars? I bought a copy for me and my son, but confess I find it a complete yawn. It's just hack one group of monsters for some inane quest and then repeat. The monsters are remarkably unvaried and the loot remarkably useless. It's the first MMORPG I've played, so may be I just don't like the genre. But it reminds me of Dungeon Siege, a very polished but very empty experience.

Personally, I am most looking forward to NWN2 - if Obsidian can deliver a single player game as atmospheric and characterful as KOTOR2, I'll be very happy.

MTW2 is also a must have, but I am a little sceptical that we will see it this year.

I've preordered Oblivion in the no doubt vain hope that it will have engaging sidequests, a compelling main story arc, interesting NPCs and decent dialogue - at least it has some acting talent doing the voice work - but I suspect the gameplay will ultimately be rather like that of Guild Wars.

I'm really looking forward to a Europa Barbarorum that I can play without multiple CTDs. That mod is as deep as it is pretty.

Crandeleon - what's the attraction of Guild Wars?

PvP. GW is being balanced with (high-level) PvP in mind, and it has succeeded rather well in that area. The PvE side admittedly fares poorly when compared to traditional RPGs; it is rather slow-paced and should progress faster from area to area, and mix up monsters a bit more. There is a good variety of critters overall, they're just spread out over a large world. The latter areas can be very challenging and interesting though, but it takes time to get there.

Loot diversity is somewhat low because the original intention is to keep the playing field as level as possible. GW is not an item-based game, and probably won't be in future chapters either, though I suspect a lot of cosmetic additions and some additional variety in stats will be introduced to items and armour.

The main hook of GW is its well-balanced and demanding, sometimes fiercely competitive, PvP. The amount of skill, teamwork, communication and planning required is immense, and there's a lot of room for growth. Mindless button-smashing it is not. I'd like to ask anyone claiming something like that to get a guild into top 20 or hold the Hall of Heroes for, say, a dozen consecutive rounds. ~;p

Part of the attraction is also the direction that the game is taking. GW devs are listening to the community for wishes and monitoring the current metagame of the tournament and guild versus guild matches. There are frequent updates and sometimes very aggressive rebalancing of skills and game mechanics; the game is now very different from the release version. Factions promises to integrate PvE and PvP in new ways, add new features to the Guilds aspect of the game (such as guild alliances) and of course spice up the metagame with two interesting new classes.

Last weekend was a sneak peek into the new classes, but also introduced lots of new features to the original game, such as a PvE practice/tutorial system for PvP. Suffice to say that I've swallowed the bait hook, line and sinker. If they can do even half of what they've promised, Factions will be light-years ahead of competition. (PvP, that is. PvE will probably still be ho-hum. ~D )
