Hi guys - I recently bought BI and am really enjoying it. Hopefully the new patch will make it even better.

However, since I am a new member and am unable to reply to topics in the other forums I would just like to recieve some insight on this small issue.

This could be a bug or a feature of the game, however in BI when you are playing a non-horde faction some of your characters, particularly the Roman ones start out with offices. Once they die the offices seem to die with them.

Is it possible for your characters to eventually gain the offices back? If so will someone please tell me the necessary pre-requisites to be issued another office? Or, is there a way to mod those retinues to make them far easier to get? I know this is a small issue but I am a bit of a micromanager and for the Romans these offices are important because some of them come with loyalty bonuses.

Thanks in advance

First of all, welcome to the Org!

To answer your question, yes, they can be reacquired but in the unmodified game it's quite difficult. First of all it's worth noticing that as with anything else in the ancillaries list, you can transfer offices from one character to another. However this requires that they been in the same place at the same time and this is frequently very difficult. It is possible for characters to gain offices of their own accord, but it seems to happen rarely (in 1.4 anyway, I don't know whether the new patch changed this) Personally I only saw it happen twice.

This seems to be because the conditions for a character to acquire an office are extremely specific: For example in order for a character to acquire the office of Magister Militum, he needs to be Roman (obviously) have at least 4 Command, at least 1 Influence, must not be the Faction Leader or heir, must have spent the entire turn inactive inside a settlement with an Imperial Palace and an Army Barracks, and no other character must already hold the office. The last condition is most significant I think, each faction can have only one person holding any office.

Also, yes you can modifiy the conditions for gaining ancillaries, as well as their affects, amongst many other things. Check out the RTW modification forums (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=72) for details.

thanks for the reply. However, do you know of a good thread in the mods section to read up on because I skimmed it and couldn't find anything

Here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=38481) is an excellent guide to editing Character Traits (aka Vices and Virtues or VnV) Unfortunately I couldn't find anything off hand about editing ancillaries, but if you can get the hang of the traits file, you should find the ancillaries file is fairly similar.

I recommend searching around in the Scriptorium (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=77) and it's subforums, this is where tutorials and other explanatory materials regarding modifying RTW are to be found.
