I'm importing textures into GMax but I can't make the alphas transparent
Anyone know if it's possible?

DDS alphas don't show up in 3DSmax either (atleast I wouldn't know how). The only way to show them is to save the alpha channel in a new image file and use that for the opacity map in your 3DS/Gmax envirement.
You can display alphas when you render your scene, but they will not display in the working windows. I don't bother. If you paint your texture right, you can see where the colour and alpha black areas will be.

Thank you both. I see that that works in 3dsMax, but I don't see how to render in GMax. Is it possible?

I don't see why not, unless GMax has no opacity channel/texture/whatever in the material editor.
