I just witnessed what I believe was the edge of map rout in a multiplayer game.I played a comp. on Totomi and my opponent tried to flank me with his taisho and got close to the edge of the map.A few volleys from my arqs. and he routed taking his entire army with him.No chance to rally or nothing.A very
cheap and distasteful victory.Hope the patch fixes it.

I haven't seen this kind of thing happen yet, but I think someone did post about this few days ago.

Actually, that's been part of the Battle Engine since the beginning, and it's only really become noticable in recent online games. I think it was partly done to keep the battles in the middle of teh field, and to simulate being driven off the field. When your armies backs are against the wall, they're going to run. I saw that as a legitimate tactic - if your opponent tries to squeeze around you, smash him against the edge of the battle map and his men will flee. Larger maps won't affect this too much, because human players will ALWAYS try to skirt the edge to sneak aroud behind his opponent, no matter how far they have to go to find that edge.

Are the maps not the same in size??

I think I saw this rout bug in action. (Cat back me up)
In a 2v2 I had just mashed Catiline troops into a pulp, http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif and had gained the high ground, my ally had been beaten by my one remaining opponent.

I was resting my troops on the hill I had just easily smashed Cat off of and letting my musks slug it out with his, when suddenly all his troops upped sticks and ran for no apparent reason (Unless they had seen how easily Cat had been beaten http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif )

His men were in the middle of the map, all my men were infront of his, his Daimyo was still alive, he had trees to his back. Basically he shouldn't have routed.
Felt bad about winning that one.

I agree that the edge of map rout is a good thing. Otherwise you have a wall to put your back against which is daft. Something has to be changed to stop the edge of the map being a wall…though it would be good to have that sort of thing in the manual 8-)

Well, there's a big difference between Edge-of-Map and what happened with Plant_Head! At first glance, I thought maybe his muskets might have scared off the enemy (there is a big morale-minus when being shot at!) but it sounds iffy. I approve of the E-o-m, but P_H's situation would irritate me!

Hitodama: I don't think that right now there are any different sized maps, but it was an idea mentioned in several posts.

I was thinking about this and wondered if being at the defenders back wall make the attackers rout?

Also I think sometimes battles go like that. If his muskets kill a couple of high honour troops that are holding the fragile morale of a troop together that might be enough to turn everything. Perhaps....

The other guy was really pissed, and I don't blame him.
Sure it could have been my musks that routed him but it was a musk on musk battle and the rest of his troops were resting, and under no missile fire at all.
