I am getting this game and am wondering if there are historical battles like medieval total war? thanks.

Their are eight odd historical battles shiped with RTW and 2 with BI

Yes, there are historical battles. If you would like more than is on RTW, there are plenty of historical battle mods in which you may download. They'll be found in the RTW mod section.
