Naval war games.
Sailing ships.
Are there any games that fit the description?
tell me about them.

Sid Meier's Pirates! on the NES is a classic, easily one of the best games ever for the system (and one of the most replayable ever). If you HAVE to have graphics, though, there's a new updated version for the PC.
Another naval game I've had fun with was High Seas Trader, though it too is a bit dated, and has much less combat than Pirates! does.
I've also heard good things about Port Royale, but never played them.

tell me about them. Yeah, what he said: Port Royale. It's a primarily trading sim with Naval battles. You can control up to 20 convoys depending on your rank. And IIRC, you can control 10 ships per convoy.
The ships are small but you can zoom. However, it's not advisable since you have to deal with multiple enemies and you need the full picture to maneuver.
It's up to you if you want to trade, hunt pirates or be a pirate yourself. :san_cheesy:

Sea Dogs is an old favourite. You can pick it up for next to nothing these days.
And Pirates of the Carribean, aka Sea Dogs 2.
Ok, they put some skeletons and stuff in it due to that disney theme, but the sea battles are really nice, IMO.

Definately a thumbs up for Pirates of the Caribbean (POTC). Sid Meiers Pirates is quite arcade looking. If you want real sea battles in glorious 3D POTC is the way to go. I've had up to twelve ships per side which gets quite difficult to control but looks great!

The bad part of POTC is that once you have had your final battle, a great big ship vs big ship battle, you can't return to open water again.
You have to go finish the game, which is practically over once you win that battle ( and no, losing there is no option ).
Hope POTC players know what I mean, without me having to spoil things for the non-POTC players.

You obviously missed the amazing mods to this game which effectively make it an open ended game in which you can do exactly what you want after the main campaign finishes. The current mod is 12.1 Go to www.Piratesahoy.net and you will find the downloadable mod which totally transforms the original game.

Indeed I have missed those mods TML, thanks for sharing them my friend !
though at the moment I'm not playing POTC anymore, but I'm sure I will in the near future, in which case, a mod is the way to go.

I must be having a blonde moment, but I can't find the downloadable mod for POTC, can you point me in the right direction?
Cheers
Edit: nvm, looks like the hamster hasn't died after all, found it.

Hi
Here's the link to the current 12.1 mod. I think you will like it, adds open ended gameplay and tons of new items, ships, missions, weapons, outfits, characters etc. Download is at the bottom of the webpage.
