I'm assuming you mean the Italy hidden resource. What this does is allow the Roman Marius Reforms Event to occur. In previous versions (i.e. patches) of RTW, it was originally triggered once an imperial palace had been built in any of the Italian provinces which has this hidden resource. Then after a certain date in the imperial campaign. I've not sure how its triggered in current versions (whether its been tweaked or not), nor the specific date (haven't since this text file ).

If you remove it from export_descr_buildings.txt and / or descr_regions.txt, you're likely to get a crash to desktop (CTD) whilst playing the campaign. Found this out a while back, not good if its an interesting campaign

I'd also leave sparta and rome in too, as removing these may cause some other unwanted problems down the line. You can find out more here:

I wanted to prevent the Marian reforms from occurring in my current modded game, so I did exactly that - removed the "italy" hidden resource from the two files you mentioned. I started in 264 BC and it's currently 201 BC - no problems. One thing that will cause a crash is failing to regenerate map.rwm after you modify, remove, or add hidden resources.

Thanks for the quick responses. And thanks to anyone and everyone who posted guides on modding.

I just started modding this weekend and couldn't have gotten very far without them.

Just some input, I had realized that the Marius Reforms occur at a certain date but now that I have downloaded patch 1.5, and made a campaign in which a few Italian cities start with an Imperial Palace, the Marius Reforms occured I believe in my first or second turn so I am guessing that in version 1.5 it is triggered once an Imperial Palace is built.
