a friend and me are arguing bout him he says saladin was kurdish and i say he wasnt

As far as I know, Saladin was indeed Kurdish.

Yes he was a kurd. Born in Tikrit iirc, which coincidentally is also the birthplace of a certain Mr. Hussain currently on trial in Iraq.

Yeah, Saladin was the pinnacle of Pan-Arab propaganda.

The irony is, Saladin was not arab himself ~;p

Then again, he spent most of his early career working for a Turkish warlord. Not really surprising, given that Turks were calling the shots in much of the Middle East at the time (and mainly fighting each other, in the grand tradition of ambitious little princedoms everwhere).

Kurds -due to their feudal lifestyle and place of origin where is generally "raped" by several hordes of nations- have always been unaware of or insensitive to their nationality. That's why they did not have any Kurdish state throughout the history based on their national roots. They were only quite affected by Nationalism and repeatedly provocated about revolting by Imperialistic super powers of the time around the fall of Ottomans -that is a topic of politics more than of the history. Their ongoing stateless position is generally related to their loose national connections that break easily with minor leaders creating fractions - according to the academicians.

Kurds are rather religious than being nationalistic. Serving the Ottoman Empire for ages without any real rebellions except for those in early 1900's were originating from the ideal of "Ummet-i Muhammed" (The community believing in and belonging to what Muhammed the prophet taught - Muslim community that is) which was one, if not the only, of the fundamentals of "being an Ottoman".

Saladin, as far as I know, was coming from an Arabic-ized Kurdish tribe. It's not surprising to see such debates over him being a Kurdish or not, just because what I mentioned above. He was Kurdish indeed.

He was pretty aware of his Kurdness, though. The Kurd population in Egypt started by his presence has lasted to date.

For the word Salah, the last letter should be a 7a, not a ha. 7a is the letter that looks like a jeem but without the dot. Ha sounds like a regular 'h', like in English for example.

So you only remove the little dot over the (for me with my latin alphabet style) first curve that with the dot looks a bit like a stylish small 'J'?

Salahadin is given more hype becuase he resisted the crusaders sucessfully. ~;p

And no the greatest arab commander is Khalid bin al Waleed. Saladin is just overhyped.

Beat the defecative material out of the Rhomaioi (Yermuk river, Ejnadeyn...) and Sassanids and never once got defeated. :knight:

Kraxis, it's already corrected mate. :san_wink: Although I was pretty familiar with the stem صلح the name somehow stuck into my mind erroneously and I typed it with ه instead of the necessary ح. :stupido:
