If I'm about to get the basic package, which is better? I've never used either and figured there'd be some folks here who know a ton about them.

Are you only looking for anti-virus capabilities? 'Cause there's a decent thread on the subject here. (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=58290)

Really need a good boot CD to figure out why I can't reinstall XP. Think it could be a virus. Then after that just a good all around protection program.

Thanks for teh link too!

McAfee, fast and easy to use.

I have it myself, and am very pleased with it.

Several years ago, I stopped using McAffee. It gave too much problems on my computer. Off course, with the introduction of XP things may have improved, I don't know about that. I am perfectly satified with my Norman virusscan. Never used Symantec though, but I understand a lot of companies do.

i would suggest trying some freeware first, after all it wont cost anything but if your dead set on buying some i would suggest getting a computer magazine like pc adviser and try and find an article where they compare the main antivirus software programs

If you have money to spend on anti-virus, Kaspersky deserves it to the last cent.

I had conflicts with Norton, so I switched to Trend Micro's PC-cillin. It's been working with no complaints for two years.

This product is made right here in San Diego, and I picked it up by walking right into the office where they produce it. The computer engineers who program it were all sitting there in the room working. One took a box off a desk and handed to me to buy. No sales staff, just paid a programmer for it.

It sounds as if this incident was a contributor to your symphaty with PC-cilin, right ?

I stopped using Norton because of the lack of flexibility, when it said rebbot then you rebboted, no I'll do it later option.

I use AVG now and it seems quite good.

With the new version, you can actually reboot later. They fixed that issue.

It's a good idea to have two anti-virus tools installed, no package is perfect. What's not detected by one, is catched by the other. The same is true for spyware removers. This has been tested for anti-virus programs by PC magazines, and I talk from recent experience regarding both viruses and spyware.

You can find a neat, free, many spyware killer in one tool at http://www.hitmanpro.nl It also support some anti-virus programs.
