A quick question about officers

On the campaign map (e.g. after a battle) if an officer is killed (like a banner bear) do they always re-generate?

Or

If they are killed in battle are they gone (i think they always regenerate but i just want to double check)

I have never had a battle without an officer so I am guessing that they regenerate since I think that once of my officers would have died in battle by now. I am not positive though.

I wouldn't be surprised if what happens is that one of the existing soldiers is then promoted to that officer's status.
