Why do cannon and catapults etc still continue to fire even with fire at will turned off and any orders halted and the enemy in retreat? I dont really want big rocks dropping on my cavalry when they're chasing down rapidly retreating troops
If they keep firing just do the Alt-click and charge your artillerymen, or tell them to withdraw, that will keep them from firing at anything.

Not ideal solutions if you're expecting enemy reinforcements. It just seems like such a big obvious bug - you'd think it would have been sorted.

I've never had a problem with them.

I usually pause the game, hit the "Hand" button to stop them from doing anything immediately, and turn off "Fire at Will". After that, they never seem to keep shooting. I'm playing MTW+VI (and mods), if you're playing plain MTW and still have a problem with this, you might try moving the artillery troops a short distance away from their equipment. Not far enough away to delay your reaction to enemy reinforcements, but far enough away they can't fire.

Yeah, that brings up a good point. If you turn off FAW, you need to hit halt to stop them from attacking the current target.
I'm playing MTW+VI 2.01 and they do tend to get a bit carried away, not all the time though. I'll try moving them back.

I will confirm this guy's advice. Artillery takes time to fire thier shots, maybe your expirence a lag between commands to stop due to load time for the apparatus?
Dont know, but follow Geezer57 advice and that should clear it up.
You may have something there, I've been taking more notice of exactly what they're doing. They seem to fire one more round, including reloading, after they've been ordered to halt.
