View Full Version : should the Backroom be closed for New Year's?

i have my reasons for asking this.

I don't see a good reason for it, unless all the available backroom mods and their stand-ins are going to be busy. Closing it just because it's New Years doesn't make any sense to me.

New Years eve is about Goodwill as well... as the Backroom is not a place of Love and Peace I agree that it should be closed... it also allows all the mods to get smashed. :gring:

Let's keep it open only on holidays that encourage animosity and mordancy. :tongueg:

I'm all for you guys getting ripped on New Year's. I guess I'm actually a 'maybe' even though I'm down as a 'no.'

That would be Columbus day? The day the First Fleet arrived in Australia? Guy Fawkes Day... etc

Proletariat

Speaking of Columbus Day, maybe those are the sort of holidays that the backroom should be closed on. What a vitriolic thread that was.

Funniest thing about Columbus was that he was wrong... he thought he literally was on the Eastern coast of India... which sort of ignores the whole continents of North and South America and the largest ocean in the world the Pacific to get there... Columbus got the size and shape of the world quite wrong... he not only thought that the world was smaller but that it was not a sphere.

Columbus's plan for reaching Asia involved sailing westward at a latitude approximating the Tropic of Cancer (23.5 degrees North), to exploit the northeast trade winds. According to information that had been gained over many centuries, the eastward distance to the Asian coast, at that latitude, was about 8,000 miles; and according to Eratosthenes's findings, the total distance around the world at that latitude was about 23,000 miles. So Columbus's westward voyage would have to cover 15,000 miles (i.e., 23,000 minus 8,000), which was far beyond the range of the ships of the time. This could hardly inspire confidence in the people from whom Columbus would seek political and financial support.

Fortunately for him, however, Eratosthenes's measurement had been repeated by others. Most of the results were close to the one that Eratosthenes had obtained, but a few were substantially larger or smaller. Columbus seized upon the smallest plausible figure, some 17,000 miles; he also assumed that he would find outlying islands long before he got to the Asian coast itself. Now he reasonably could tell prospective supporters that he would have to travel only 5,000 miles (a distance that conceivably could be covered by existing ships) before reaching some kind of land.

In fact, of course, Columbus found land -- not in Asia but in the New World -- after sailing only 3,000 miles. Along the way, he kept a bogus log in which he deliberately understated each day's progress, so that his fearful crew would not know how far they were from home. Even so, the crew came close to mutiny.

I agree on closing of the Backroom for the New Year's Day. This restart has been none good at all. It seems as if we all piled up some anger to flame on each other.

The closing will be enough for a silent warning upon all of us. I counted so many "fool", "pity" addressings in at each other in threads opened after the latest Xmas ceasefire.

Briefly, do it, me thinks. :rtwyes:

Anything with relatives then...

BTW thanks for "mordancy" prole, that was a new one on me and in my line of work I can't imagine how I have got by without it. I will be using it at least weekly from now.

Close it if you want Soly.

Must agree I like that word... seems a requirement for Aussie Citizenship that you survive the mordancy of the other Citizens. :gring:

If you leave it open it would give members of the backroom a chance to prove that they are capable of being nice people...:gring:

I think it should be closed, as alot of the older (and teenage) orgahs will be drinking themselves senseless...myself included...that post in the backroom, we wouldnt want drunken rants at each other when our views are so politically divided now would we? :)

I can understand how the mods would want New Year's eve/day off so they are not responsible for the backroom.

Take the time off and live it up.:rtwyes:

Seeing as New Year's is an occasion for excitement and gross excess, I see no reason to close the Backroom on that date. Better 'twould be to leave it open and unmoderated, to allow anyone who really wished to be there an opportunity to spit and tear and claw however much they like in a violent and fitting celebration of endings and beginnings and the cycle of life.

(This would also allow the Mods full opportunity to get as drunk as they please.)

Is it not a custom in most of the world to fire shots in the air to get out all the bad of the old year? This would be similar.

Nope, in Aus the custom is to line up shots and still be able to stand up for the count down.

Maybe even do a hundred shots of beer in a hundred minutes...

My favorite way of celebrating New Year's is to have peace and tranquility. I do not party or drink, quite the opposite: I listen to calming music, find some nature, if possible, and think of the world as one whole, rather than separate cultures/nations/religions, etc.

In other words, you can close the Back Room if you like, because I won't be in a mood to write anything for it anyway.

Indeed, and the underlying idea is still destruction.

Depends on the shots

Maybe even do a hundred shots of beer in a hundred minutes...

Done this twice, both times in Korea - but the unit I was in added a nasty kick to it. Three of the shots were hard - one was Soju (Shot Number 50), one was Jack, (Shot Number 75) and one was Tequila (last one). It can lead to a nasty hangover especially if you were drinking Soju before you started this.

Too old for drinking games here. Had hoped to attend the Soly-sponsored staff party in NYC, but logistics have intervened, and must send regrets.

Holding out for getting quietly sloshed on the rear deck with Mrs. Kukri, watching the local fireworks, after a dinner of slow-roasted Prime Rib. Might cost half-a-week's pay, but hey...

Oh-five has been a bear...but I've seen worse. Here's to aught-6, and hope, and humor.

Close it if it seems right. But I don't see the need. What're they gonna do - burn it down?

I voted no before I realized the mods would like to take a break. Feel free to take some time off, guys, for all the hard work you've done.

On the other hand, I'm really enjoying my thread on Bush's authorization of wiretaps, so if you feel like sticking around, be my guest.

You know, things like that can really destroy a guy and lead to alcoholism, drug abuse/addiction, lack of hygene, STDs, and lack of confidence.
