View Full Version : What's the Most Parocial Place in America?
I've been thinking about this for no particular reason. What's the most blinkered place in the U.S.? Where are you most likely to find people who don't know or care about the outside world? Having recently moved from New York, I'm inclined to say hellz yeah, New York. But are they really the worst? Please, make your case for the most parochial place on the continent.

Not sure you can make much of a case for NY without mentioning the City of Angels (they epitomize the idea of an obtuse city, imho), but I always figured the real mooks were somewhere out in the sticks, likesay West Va.
Interesting topic, I'll try to add more when it isn't so late.
Edit: I'll vote for SF, since LA isn't mentioned by name. I wouldn't want to impugn the entire region while the city of SF is an option.

Umm, the word you are looking for is provincial, my friend. If we were talking about parochial places, then St. Louis would probably top the list.

SFTS, I don't think the criteria you used jives with the topic. Not to put words in his mouth, but I think Lemur was curious about geographical myopia. Correct me if I'm wrong.

smaller words please
this is what I got Narrowly restricted in scope or outlook; provincial: parochial It would still be Texas
If your wanting to find the place in the United States which I found to be the most parochial is some of the small towns in Eastern Oklahoma and Western Arkansas. They rarely were concerned about anything outside of their county.
On your list thought I would Have to go with the Appalachia
Mountain Range.
Don't feel limited by my poll; I just threw that together to make life more graphically interesting. Prole, I hate to think of L.A. as a city, it's more of a region. So you could vote for SoCal and still be true to yourself.
Parochial:1.relating to or supported by or located in a parish; "parochial schools" 2. insular: narrowly restricted in outlook or scope; "little sympathy with parochial mentality"; "insular attitudes toward foreigners"

Appalachia is pretty messed up, especially the people who live on the sides of mountains and eek out there existence.
Red is right on about Eastern Oklahoma. This is where they shoot at the census man when he comes to visit, throw in white lightning and meth and some Toby Keith and you have a winner

I'd say DC...they think they're the center of the universe...
It's pathetic...hey look...Texas has the most votes...
And I live in Texas...I seek outside knowledge!
Let's face it -- the poll is wildly incomplete. Why did I include both North California and San Francisco? Why did I pick on Appalachia, but leave out the Ozarks? Why isn't Utah in there?
I'll tell ya why -- 'cause I whipped up the poll in under one minute. Pure sloppiness. Ignore the poll -- it signifies nothing.
My case for New York City: Where else in the world would you have a drunken lady screaming at you in a bar, "Hello!?!? New Yawk! Center of da univoise!!!" And meaning it sincerely. Every spittle-laced word.
New Yorkers may take idle interest in the outside world, but they really expect the world to come to them. They are, after all, center of da univoise.

New Yorkers may take idle interest in the outside world, but they really expect the world to come to them. They are, after all, center of da univoise. All city-dwellers are like that. At least new York is truly a Big Apple. Amsterdam for instance is a Small Mushy Blueberry, yet its inhabitants call every outsider a 'peasant'. Tramline 4, which carries visitors to and fro between Central Station and the yearly Agricultural fair, is dubbed the 'peasant cart'.
Definitely Idaho and Utah, specifically Rexburg Idaho or Provo Utah.
I drive past these places without stopping, for fear of becoming infected with their virulent strains of parochialism
