View Full Version : Removing Senate?

I'm unifying Rome in my latest Mod and want to remove the Senate also. I haven't tried this before. Does anybody know what the consequences will be other than the obvious like no senate or missions for the romans? Will it even work, I've heard it will.

I know how to modify the campaign strat file. I just need to know if it's done in the same way and if their are any unintended consequences.

P.S. I got the 'we haven't had any posts from you recently' message today when I logged in. I feel like you guys missed me or something. I've mainly been using this site to link tutorials for folks asking questions at the other sites.

No senate missions, no elections. No strange side-effects that I've noticed.

I initially started from this:

https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=50446

though I found it better to remove all "former Roman" characters. I've played the campaign game all the way through with this mod and had no problems.

I've since experimented (briefly) with removing the Senate entry completely from the descr_strat.txt file. This requires that you remove the "superfaction romans_senate" line from the remaining roman faction entry and prevents the "faction destroyed" message at the beginning of the game. I've noticed no problems with this though I've not done much testing. Will do so next time I start a campaign.

What about the 'at war' stuff. I intend to have just the one roman faction the Julii so do I still need the diplomacy lines.

If you leave the Senate faction entry in descr_strat.txt, the Julii must be at war with the Senate in order for the Senate to be destroyed. If they aren't at war, the Senate will continue to issue missions.

If you remove the Senate entry completely, I don't see that it matters.

Have you seen a tutorial on what has to remain and what must go. I'm working off an old mundus magnus unified rome strat file. It leaves parts of the other factions info still in there. This is what I've done so far I moved all towns to the Julii, carthage or the rebels. I added or moved armies to the apropriate citys but I didn't create any new characters. I eliminated all but this

faction romans_brutii, balanced stalin
superfaction romans_senate
denari 20000

faction romans_scipii, bureaucrat napoleon
superfaction romans_senate
denari 20000

faction romans_senate, comfortable napoleon
denari 20000

and I moved the brutii and scipii to the nonplayable
like this
campaign BareBones ;; v1.4
playable
romans_julii
egypt
seleucid
carthage
parthia
gauls
germans
britons
greek_cities
macedon
pontus
armenia
dacia
scythia
spain
thrace
numidia
end
unlockable

end
nonplayable
romans_senate
romans_brutii
romans_scipii
slave
end

start_date -280 summer
end_date -40 summer

Right now its CTD'ying without an error message from show_err, any ideas.

Just the link I added in a earlier post.

I don't know anything about mundus magnus. What you've posted looks OK to me.

Just off the top of my head:

Did any characters change factions? If so, they must have names appropriate for the new faction.

Did the magnus mundus strat file work before you made any mods?

I know how you feel at this point - unfortunately when you're in this situation and need help the most, others are least able to give it. Good luck.

Well the M/M strat file worked fine on M/M. Now I'm trying to mod the strat file for the barebones version of warmap 1.4 using the M/M file as my guide. All that previuos file had was a unified rome and many changes I made. I hadn't tried to eliminate the senate. So far I havn't been able to change ownership of a region without CTD's. Though I can change the size or types of troops without problem. I'll look it over again in the morning and see if it's an obvious typo or some simple error.

P.S. At least my ZOR setup is working fine.

You can simply remove the brutii, scipii, and senate entries, give their provinces to someone else, and remove the superfaction romans_senate line from the julii and it will work.

Eeer. superfactions ? I know this isn't the right thread but actually I'm re-adding senate to my RTR as I'm doing some Roma like version (only Romans playable) and would like to add senate as I prefer my expansion according to senate's order.

But my game ctd , is it because i didn't include the superfaction line ? Actually I'm comparing the vanilla strat file and RTR and merging them. show_err didn't show anything though.

The superfaction line is added in 1.3 and 1.5, so you don't need to add it for RTR as it runs on 1.2

Well I just went back to ground zero and am starting over one region at a time. So far I've been able to take regions from the roman factions and give them to the Carthaginians the rebels and the Julii, I've been sucessful at removing characters, so it's just a matter of time before I narrow it down. When I take too many steps at a time it's darn near impossible to isolate the problem.

One step at a time is the way to proceed. Good luck.

Oh I'm so close. I first took out the other roman factions and reassigned their provinces. One or two snafu's but that works, I thought. Then I eliminate the senate, after the first try I missed a ; before the senate dinari line it fires up the second time. Everythings good right, WRONG, now I'm hungup on two of the provinces I gave to the rebels. Everytime I double click on one of these 2 cities it CTD's. Now I've already got 2 new rebel cities that work so I'm scratching my head.

I have fog of war turned off for the test process. I can view 2 of my newly bestowed rebel cities but not these two. I'm going to try changing the garrisons and generals names, sub factions and see if that will cure it.

At least the senate are gone. I'm down to just one roman faction now and all their cities seem to be working fine.

P.S. I found the work around. I gave them to factions instead, it seems they don't like the smell of brigands. Nothing I did could convince them otherwise. Well only 40 some more to go. :wall:

I solved the problem. When removing factions from the game all references of the deposed factions must be removed from the culture and creator lines in the regions file and strat file respectively or you get scrolling crashes.

After getting everything up and running I did get one CTD thats 'Missing Senate' related. Don't hit the Senate offices button just to see.........CTD.
