I just recently stumbled upon this thread in the RTR forums. I gave it a try and it does improve your game!

Just found out that you can GREATLY improve RTW/RTR/BI gameplay, allowing you to up your settings by at LEAST one notch, all for free, and without any risk, by doing the following.

Start RTW

Alt-Tab to Windows

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del for the Windows Task Manager

go to the Processes tab

Select Rome-TW.exe or Rome-TW-BI.exe (so the gray bar moves to it)

Rightclick your mouse to get the options and choose Set Priority

Set Priority to High

[EXPLICITLY NOT to Realtime, that's NOT what you want, it will cause trouble]

That's it.

Expect to be amazed on some setups, pleased on just about all.

You have to set this one manually every time, only drawback, but I'll see what it does in the registry and make a permanent fix for this.

Later.

The rest of the tips are at this link ----------> http://forums.rometotalrealism.org//index.php?showtopic=12828

I've been watching RTW forums for some time now, and just found this one! So if this is news to you, give it a try!

you don't have to set this manually each time, you can in fact set it up in the shortcut that starts rtw..

I think it's something like "start /<priority> <application>" e.g. start /high rometw.exe

Don't remember exactly, but that's what I had set up in my RTW on my last computer. Haven't had RTW installed in quite a while now.

In Chesters' 1st post there is a link to the RomeTotalRealism.org post where he obtained his information. If you go there you will see that Spurius who wrote it also has a link to a former topic. If you go to that link, you will find a post at the very end which explains the easiest way to enable this in your icon target line. Basically, you can change it to the following for just playing the game(you can skip the "-enable_editor" part). Make sure that you have the game directly in the Activision folder and not some other one you have created.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /C "start /HIGH RomeTW.exe %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9"
