I just decided to play Rome Total War again since I had nothing else better to do and I notice there's a 1.5 for it now???

I thought CA was never gonna patch R:TW again even after all those petitions and boycotts etc were happening after 1.2 so what happened?

Never listen to rubbish basically!

Well with the expansion pack, CA did some extra work on the game and released a couple of much needed patches for the original RTW. It's now in a reasonable state. Hurrah.

They responded to the pressure. Makes sense really, in previous TW expansions you ended up with an updated base game as well (if memory serves.)

1.5 is better than 1.2, but the porting of the BI exe to RTW also introduced some problems. Still looks like it needs a final patch to clean up both BI and RTW.

Don't say that, the pila bug is extremely annoying to me! The siege tower bug also.

If they fix those, I'm happy.

Um, isn't the pila bug fixed in 1.5?

Yes it is.
That they throw in the middle of combat is in 1.2 as well.
I noticed that when I'm playin EB.

Yes and no. The 1.3 pila no AI pila bug is fixed. They now throw even after melee has started. It went from no pila to a heckuva lot of pila. There is a problem with individuals being able to hurl pila while they are in melee (but listed as "idle" with crossed swords--figure that one out!) :dizzy2: It used to be that for the AI this only applied to the initial charge cycle--allowing units to actually use their pila. Now it seems to apply all the time. Pila have become overly effective as a result. What sticks out about this being obviously wrong is that javs, archers, and such cannot do the same.

Some experienced players indicate that they (the human player) have always had this capability, while the AI has not. I can't say that I've seen it prior to 1.5, but it could simply be something that I didn't try because it didn't seem like a logical thing.

Untill they fix diplomacy back to the way it was in 1.2, 1.5/1.6 can burn, so can 1.3...

That´s because the Pila attack is the default attack for the legionaires. Select a unit engaged in combat and move the cursor over an enemy, it will show the Pila icon. It works for all version from 1.2 (don´t know about before, I patched directly to 1.2 when I installed the game)

Exactly what Ciaran said. Essentially all you do is just re-attack the unit the pila unit is in melee with. Works wonders on walls where the number of troops able to attack is much more limited.

I had the impression that when they throw the pila in melee, they are more vulnerable to enemy melee attacks. At least, that's what I recall it looking like when I did what Jambo said and ordered my men to throw pila while in a scrummage on the walls. I concluded it was better to let them duke it out (being Roman heavy infantry, they were good with their swords). But I may be wrong about that.

I believe the reasons Romans have ranks 4-5 deep is because only the first 2 line is actually active in melee and the rest is back up (or maybe cycle). So the back line beeing able to throw pila is realistic and not a bug I believe. The 'bug' maybe is throwing the pilla into the back of your comrades.. Ehehh.. though for highly_trained legionaires this such things is not possible to happend I believe..

why all the fuss? juz ALT-left click and they will charge with their swds and shields. absolutely no pila at all ;)

or what i usually do, put my 1st line on fire at will, once they fired their 1st volley, counter charge by ALT and double left click.
