View Full Version : Anyone know anything about smoke detectors?

I just came to my room after having fallen asleep on the couch to find the smoke detector beeping every 30 seconds. One beep every 30 seconds. I took out the battery but it's still going. I pressed the button on it and it made the actual smoke alarm (piercing my ears in the process) but the beeping continues. I haven't slept for over a day, so... tired... Anyone know anything they wouldn't mind sharing to help alleviate this problem?

1) Try the couch or some other room:idea2:

2) If you're really desperate, rip the mother out of the ceiling...:laugh4:

Has too many wires goin' to and from the ceiling, don't want to take a chance. Not sure what exactly to do... I guess couch it is then........ :hide:

It certainly sounds like a low-battery warning, but if it keeps beeping even after replacing the battery (test more than one battery), then it's broken.

Ripped off or couch until fixed I guess. Or try to remove the backup battery (it has to get power from somewere).

Its a battery problem, just means that it is low. Right before the battery goes out, it'll beep for about 5 minutes solid, often at about 3am...

5 minutes? Try the entire night. I'm still up. It's 11 a.m. already. Thankfully I'm used to not sleeping too much, otherwise I'd be really pissed.

Heya Wonderland,

How many buttons does it have? Have you tried repushing the button when it is sounding off?

Hmm, interesting but didn't really catch anything about the beeping. Although it's pretty much been confirmed that it's the battery at this point.

Yeah, nothing really happened though. It kept going for a while then eventually stopped. Don't know if it was because of pressing or on it's own. Don't really want to experiment with that one, lol.

Just a quick update for everyone, all is well! New battery installed and it stopped... funny thing though.... as soon as my room one stopped, another went off in another room. A quick change of a battery fixed that though, so that's that.

Thanks all! ~

Aha, the old "swapping your dud battery with your neighbour" ploy... ;-)

Now that's an idea - four flatmates, frequently stoned... I no longer buy food that doesn't require something complicated like preparation - they just eat it all. Anything of that sort I do require, I keep in my room.

Laxatives left in samples of food have always been a temptation... That or ebola.

Just do what I did: take it off the wall PULL OUT EVERY BATTERY (don't put anything back in) and put it back up on the wall as a decoration

Pffft...

Smoke Alarms...you put your life in the hands of man-made machines?

I set aside a score of my personal monkey servants to monitor the house for a fire...

That's what caused the fire in the first place.
