Uhh, Rebels take over the Circus?

So I was playing the campaign as the Julii, and civil war is looming with the Brutii, so when one of their provinces on the border with me (in central Germany) rebelled (gladiator rebellion) I took notice.

I attempted to get an army there as quickly as possible, but the Brutii beat me, with two full stacks of men. The first stack besieged the provinced and was destroyed (this is after the Marius Reforms), the same fate awaited the second stack.

I decided then to jump in and take the city, I mean the rebels must be weak, right?

I had seige weapons with me, so I immediately attacked, only to find myself not fighting gladiators, but rather 3 units of the small elephants, and one unit of the massive elephants (the ones with like 6 archers on top). I couldn't believe it. I used my onagers to pick off a few elephants, then advanced my spearmen and ranged units with the calvary and grinded out the rest of the elephants with heavy losses.

Anyone else had a weird battle like this?

How did Carthaginian/Selucian Elephants get to Italy?

It was just barbs in an elephant suit, kinda like the trojan horse.

I havent had a battle like this but I once found myself fighting rebel gauls in Asia.

The large elephant crew you describe sounds like the oliphants (or Yubtseb Elephants). Usually they're much larger than the other elephant types (they've been scaled upwards), but have similar stats to mercenary war elephants. Why they have 30 hitpoints is beyond me, especially when the hard-coded limit for this is 15.

You can specify which rebel units spawn in a gladiator uprising event (as well as the probability of it occurring) in descr_rebel_factions, under non region based events.

You're probably on about the Galatians. A celtic tribe that settled in Asia. Nothing unusual about fighting them there, although if you've never heard of them before, then I suppose it is a strange encounter!

Strangest thing I experienced (though not a battle) was when I deliberately forced as many settlements of my empire as I could to rebel. Suddenly a Roman rebel diplomat asked me for a ceasefire on behalf of the rebels. I've heard people experiencing that before, though I assumed that was in modded games. My campaign was practically unchanged, but I guess it's something that just happens now and again. Nice chap though, even if his toga was filthy. After sending him on his way with a smile on his face after I agreed to his terms, I had his neck cut. Well, he was making my palace look untidy.

Twice now I have had patavium rebel in the early game and the city hover tab calls it the "Gladiator Rebellion". Both times the city was filled with a couple gladiator units and other weird exotics, like libyan skirmishers and eastern infantry. Pretty cool, and decently experienced.

Because nobody is tougher than Bestbuy! They crush all their opposition. Best remedy is catapults at range (with the ammo off :laugh4: )

I had something similar when I forced Corduba to revolt so I could massacre the population which had got too large. Moved my army (mostly 2/3 chevrons some bronze armour/weapon upgrades) out, thinking I could take the paltry peasants and Iberian infantry that would spawn with ease. Oh no! Suddenly I'm (or rather my general, and he's about 19 and a half with 2 stars on his first assignment) is facing a full stack of silver chevroned, gold armour/weapons of some the best exotic units in game. British Chariots, Parthian Cataphracts, Spartan Hoplites etc. No elephants, thankfully. Ended up having to seige the city for about five turns to get the numbers down and retake it. :wall:

Possibly. I am playing 1.5/1.6. There were a few gladiator units in the mix, but it was predominately exotics. I suppose that's sort of realistic in a way; all those slaves coming back from the far flung provinces...

Never experienced that, I'm playing 1.5 and all I get are some peasents and Gladiators. But still, maybe because I started the campaign before patching then I patched it to 1.5.

Had that happen a couple of times, I think I even said yes a couple od times.

And also did you know that the rebel city in Ireland ( Tara ? ) is the rebel capital.

Well it wasn't a slave revolt...

Its quite clear (due to an ongoing investigation by my general Cornelius the Lewd and the elite Arcani CSI unit) that the ancient equivelent of the Ringling brothers was in central Germany and holding their elephant extravaganza event in the warrior hall when it was stormed by gladiators with fake swords who were set to do with next act. They hopped on the elephants and demand the town submit the will of Bestbuy...

Or perhaps it was a ploy, the Ringling brothers, realizing a civil war was about to happen decided to take a share of the pie marched their elephants right out of the big top and through the towns local garrison force....

Worst of all, no elephant types are under the "gladiator rebellion" thing in my descr_rebelfactions text... something is wrong...
