Hello,
I have a question on changing portraits of family members. I did a search, but really did not get the answer I was looking for.
What I want to do is change some of my family member portraits (Macedon) to other portraits of the same culture (I'd prefer if my bald general rather have a headful of hair).
This is for the beginning of a vanilla campaign (version 1.0).
I don't really know much of modding (only tinkered with the descr_strat and export_descr_units files a bit) so I would appreciate it if your directions were infantile :laugh4:.
Also, do I have to download a PAK editor to view the portraits?
Thanks in advance

I don't think there is any way of assigning certain portraits to family members as discussed in few other threads on this forum.

There is a way around it if you extract PAK files. You would need to start campaign and see what portrait has been assigned to your character.Take a screeshot of family tree or even better page with general's traits.Go to UI and find folders containing pictures of your generals. Here is where a tricky part starts: finding correct generals tga file- this is where your screenshoot taken earlier comes handy. If I remeber right there a least 100+ images to go through and some look very similar. All tga files have their numbers -in order to have different picture for your general you need to change the number, so your image has got the same number as portrait seen in campaign.I had my Seleucid character pictured as Eastern Diplomat, choice is yours. And finally you need to delete ui_0.pak file or new picture would not appear.

Hello, thanks for your response, I tried this but the picture would not change. I changed both the old and young portraits, but the same picture remained...
When I deleted ui_0.pak, the game CTD'd...

Please make sure you unpack all files and copy/past them in correct locations
The portraits are in ui_0.pak. A few tips though:
The number of portraits of each type (general/civillian) for each seem to be somewhat hardcoded into the game, so if you only have say 20 portraits and it decides that family member x has portrait number 35, it may have some issues. However it generally seems to default to the roman portrait set (which is also the largest) if it can't find the correctly numbered portrait for the relevant culture. I'm not sure what happens if it can't find a roman portrait of the right number.
Another thing: if you only extract ui_0.pak and disable it (by renaming/deleting the file), the game won't load. This is because it can't find ui_1.pak if ui_0.pak does not exist. So for it to work you'll either need to extract ui_1.pak too, or rename ui_1.pak to ui_0.pak.

Hmm. I unpacked the files, but don't know where to copy/paste them, they are currently sitting in data/packs as a DATA folder...

Cut and past all folders from packs/date to main game's directory. It will ask you if you you overwrite... press "yes"

Hans Kloss, your advice worked. Thank you very much not only for a nice way to go around the annoying hardcode, but also for being extremely patient and thorough in your directions. You get my vote for most helpful...

Gah, one of the portraits doesn't change:

Still, in the family tree and the description it is changed...much better than nothing.

It looks like you might have missed replacing picture in folder with large tga files.I'm at work now so have no access to RTW but will get back to you later

Make sure that you replace tga files for selected character in both folders:
"Cards" and "Portraits"
