I've been playing as carthage, and only for a relatively short time (20 yrs maybe) and I'm already getting messages that Egypt is about to win. Is this normal? (I'm playing on vh campaign). I'm surprised that the only faction who has been aggressive toward me is in fact my allies, the Ptolemaoi. (I suspect this is because the AI chooses its wars based on proximity). So, I wonder, does the AI know what its own victory conditions are, or is it just attacking its neighbors?

They won't really win. Those messages pop up sometime - I don't know how to stop them and don't know who can tell us. Posting this in the bug thread might get the right people to look at it sooner, but I've no idea really. Just ignore them for now though.

No, afaik we can't really do anything to prevent the message from popping up, but it means nothing.

Maybe you should change it to sth like "Faction x is growing in power, bla bla..."? This actually would be useful for the player...

EDIT: ~:)

I actually got an announcement sayign Egypt won in my Casse campaign, but nothing seemed to come of it. I did, however, get flooded by bunches of advancement messages, i.e. handpumps and such.

That was probably the 246 BC Apocalypse, foretold by calculations made by Archimedes on his analytical solar-powered abacus. (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=58691)

I believe this message comes up when any faction reaches the 50+ province mark. It lets you know that all they need to do to win is to take Rome. I'm not certain, but I believe the message activation is hardcoded. You may be able to change the message content.
