"It may be time to have a discussion about the safety of these so-called video 'games'," said one House Representative who spoke on condition of anonymity. "It has become clear that these devices can impair proper childhood development. What kind of game causes a physical reaction in the user? It's scary."

These statements were echoed Thursday by a local demonstration near a Best Buy retail shop in San Diego and sponsored by Mothers of America for Healthy Youth. More than one hundred representatives showed up for the demonstration, chanting the slogans "games are lame" and "save our kids".

San Diego Best Buy Manager Johnathon Gonzalez informed Channel 6 that there were no plans to implement safety warning labels on video game console products.

what happened to the good old days when we killed small animals without games slowing us down?

Ban the games!

If you do anything constantly, you'll have some adverse effects.

His parents should be glad he's playing video games rather than spending all his time doing hard drugs. But did they mention this in the article? Pfffft.

Some parents just need to let go. If the games are being physically harmful to the kid or cutting into necessary minimum schoolwork time, then they ought to intervene. However, they need to accept it if the kid is not turning into their dream child and would rather play video games instead of cleaning the house or joining the National Honor Society. At the cost of sounding like my younger self, it seems that these parents have manipulative plans.

I'm with the doctor on this one.

Can't see the point in protesting though, just don't buy your kid a game system.

Every organization with the word Mother in it has nothing but members who are either bored or have nothing to do, just take away the system, or tell to go outside.

I know that too many video games over an extended period of time can **** up your head, but physical effects? I don't think so. Unless you count too little exercise.

RTFM.

From the Barbarian Invasion manual, page 1: "Use this software in a well-lit room, staying a good distance away from the monitor [...] to not overtax your eyes.
...
In rare instances, stimulation from strong light or flashing when staring at a monitor or television screen can cause muscular convulsions or loss of consciousness for some people."

The parents can´t claim they didn´t know what their child was exposed to.

New legislation would ban violent game sales to kids
By Peter Cohen pcohen@maccentral.com

California Democrat Joe Baca has introduced legislation to the U.S. House of Representatives that would make it crime for retailers to sell or rent video games to minors which depict violent or sexual acts.

Baca's legislation, dubbed, The Protect Children from Video Game Sex and Violence Act of 2002, was put forth only a few days after a U.S. District Court judge ruled that video games are not a constitutionally protected form of free speech. That judge upheld an ordinance in St. Louis, Mo. that requires parental consent before minors can purchase graphically violent or sexually explicit video games.

Baca referenced student shootings in Colorado and Germany when he said, "I'm a parent and grandparent, and I've had enough of the violence we're experiencing among our youth ... Parents have to take responsibility for their children and monitor where they are learning their behavior from, but stores have a community responsibility to help keep kids from harmful material as well."

Illinois House OK's governor's video-game ban
By John O'Connor, Associated Press
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois House approved Gov. Rod Blagojevich's proposed ban on selling violent and sexually explicit video games to children, sending it to the Senate Wednesday over the complaints of several lawmakers who said the bill was flawed.
In an hourlong debate on the House floor, several legislators called the bill unconstitutional, unfair and intrusive to families who should determine what their children see.

"I'm asking you to stand up for the First Amendment. I'm asking you today to tell parents, 'That's your responsibility, not mine,'" Rep. Bill Black, R-Danville, told the House.

The measure would require store owners to determine which video games are violent or sexually explicit and not sell them to children younger than 18. Violators could face a year in prison or a $5,000 fine.

Is your child receiving poor grades in school in every subject except Computer Education? Is your child spending a lot of time in their bedroom and at home? MAVAV is dedicated to educating parents in today's fastest increasing threat and danger to
our child's health and way of life:

Video Game Addiction and Violence and Underground Video Game Cultures

Today video game addiction is becoming an ever increasing problem, comparable now, even to alcohol and drug abuse. While video game companies continue to market violence aimed at vulnerable children and young teens. And the newest absurdity, underground video game cultures which takes gaming to another level, tainted with online "clans", singling out of people, hatred, racism, and sexism.

Video Games: The Frightning Facts

Fact: Video games aren't just for "fun" anymore, the video game industry made a net income of $6.3 billion in 2002, surpassing even the movie industry. Developers profit and continue to take advantage of today's youth with cute, loveable, addictive, and recognizable franchise characters. A practice and strategy similar to those used by the tobacco industry.

Fact: Video games have been proven to prevent the development of the proper social skills and interaction needed for a long happy and enjoyable life. Young gamers are prone to being burdened with depression and sadness all throughout their life

Fact: Health studies have found that even those casual gamers suffer from low self-esteem and self-pride compared to their athletic and more socially accepted peers in their same age group. Young gamers were found to be more likely to become lifetime gaming addicts and becoming social outcasts.

Fact: Hardcore gaming not only leads to video game addiction and abrupt lifestyle changes, but to crime and felony as well. Hardcore gamers never buy computer video games. Instead, downloading illegally copied video games or “warez” is the only method acceptable by the underground. Buying a legit copy is grounds for abandonment by community groups. You may not be buying your child videogames, but they can illegally obtain them off the internet

Danger: Do video games make people violent?
Yes. What was once a debatable question, is now fact. New research has concluded that video game violence and behavior related violence are in fact closely related.

Danger: Do video games teach people how to kill?
Yes. When video games were linked to the Columbine high school shooters, a frenzy of new research was launched, in which, one team of researchers discovered that first person shooter games do indeed teach gamers with the basic knowledge of how to kill. This research arrived be so conclusive that the U.S. government Army developed a free video game to be used as a virtual boot camp and killing simulator.

I don't really have a problem with age restrictions on games, although I wouldn't mind my (hypothetical) 10y old playing San Andreas or something, but the parents should be able to decide until the kids have reached a certain age and level of maturity. Besides, then we can start blaming parents who let their kids play these games instead of the people who make these games.

It's hilarious that they're still using the old geek cliches though, while they might be true up to some point (at least in my generation), the *hardcore* and professional gamers don't tend to be that unathletic

Come to think of it, probably more kids get hurt doing sports than playing videogames. A lot of 'athletic' people my age have had surgery due to sport related injuries. Are there Mothers against Sports ?

Could anyone explain to my ignorant mind why video games are not considered Free Speech in the United States of PG-13?

Congress seriously needs to be stormed, its member arrested, tied up, and torched down the Medieval way, then put the members' head on spikes and sent them to every "Moral Majority"-style organization as a warning to back off.

What I have to say to those who propose the legislation, and those who support it: It's your kids, be responsible. Rockstar Games is not responsible for the foundation of any and every LA gangs available. And keep your hands off me, I'm not your son, you stupid old fundie; go be a swinger or somethin'.

If Chuck Berry had been performing now, there would be a "Mothers Against Berry". And speaking of which, I wonder how many of these mothers recall what their favorite old rock-and-roll songs were really about? "We boogied in the kitchen, we boogied in the hall, I got some on my finger, so I wiped it on the wall!" :inquisitive: :laugh4: (And there's "My Ding-a-ling"... ol' Chuck really was crazy.)

You guys realize that "the frightening facts" were taken from the site, right?

I am not arguing for the ban of video games here.

I've been an "addict" myself since getting a nintendo entertainment system in 1986! That was twenty years ago! :laugh4: I sepnt many an hour with Super Mario, Link, and some crazy commando with a mechanical arm used to hang and swing around while blowing crap up before killing Hitler in a giant spaceship at the end (what the hell was the game called?)
