Hello everyone. I'm looking for a program similar to Microsoft Words as I can't pay the Office budget myself (as a student, the 170+$ is atrocious and an impossibility -- damn Microsoft) that I can freely download from the internet/i.e. Freeware.
Does anyone knows any reliable one? It'd be excellent if it can use and create .doc documents and such.
Thank you.

whatever word processor came with your computer should be able to save in multiple formats - .doc being one of them.
How does free (http://www.openoffice.org/) strike your fancy?

Kewl. I'm downloading it now.
Thank you so much! I need the program to "write" stuff in the computer as Wordpad is pure terror to anyone who even remotely tries to write. :sweatdrop:
Edit: Tried it. This is excellent. Not as smooth as MS-Word but way better than Wordpad and free!

You can also get a 60 day trial of Office if you do a search in google, plus it allows you to buy an Activation Code at the end of the trial...pretty convienent for Microsoft.
I've said it before elsewhere -- it's not that hard to obtain a copy of MS Office without paying for it. But isn't it better to use and support open source products? There are all sorts of long-term benefits to doing so.
In my previous job, the IT monkeys were so in love with Microsoft that, as one monkey put it, "If Microsoft made a toilet paper, we'd buy it." This philosophy had terrible effects on our productivity. Because they insisted on using Active Directory for everything, our network needed hours of downtime every week. Bad mojo.
Open source software. There is a better way.
