I've noticed that in less Welsh speaking areas of Wales (like the South East) some of the bilingual sign posting is done very badly. I bet that was done by somebody on purpose to wind up Welsh speakers (as I guess you'd want to look right as the traffic drives on the left).

You'd also have to discard several letters (ks, zs etc.).

We spend a really stupid amount of money on bilingual signs. I've never met one person in Wales who didn't speak English.

I've met several people in Wales who speak Welsh but not English (mostly Patagonian) and plenty who are far more comfortable in Welsh than in English.

And then there are the foreigners you encounter there too (and I mean the non-English foreigners) whose English isn't always very good.

Anyway, isn't Wales meant to be bilingual Welsh/English now (National Assembly claims it is anyway)? The Welsh speakers tend to have kept their side of the bargain, what about everybody else?

I bet you there are far worse wastes of money than having slightly larger signs with double the lettering on them (which is what the bilingual ones are). When it comes down to it, what is the problem with slighlty larger signs? If you have no problem with slightly larger signs then you really can't have much problem with bilingual signs.

that'd be 51 letters in Welsh and 58 in English. It would not fit the scrabble board so we couldn't account for multiple word/letter scores.
