That was a well and concisely presented question. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
I usually switch to Loose if I have the time, that way less people get stuck on trees. This works best with assault units, and is only worth doing if you intend to fight right there among the trees.
However: spearmen on Close Formation / Hold Formation / Hold Position vs. cavalry in a forest is the most terrifying paper-scissors-stone mismatch possible. The cavalry will get totally slaughtered. Ugh.

I tend to use close formations in forest since archers can't dealt much damage from me anyway.

yes, that has happened to me a few times before I got to grips with the game.
An additional question: Although trees do afford protection from enemy arrows, do they impede your own archers if they fire from within a forested area?

Staz..Yes, they are affected by intervening trees, branches which interfere with accuracy.
Hach... My troops aren't allowed to fight in open formation. They like it shoiulder to shoulder as it improves their morale.

For actual combat i use close formation... the only reason I would want to be in loose formation is if I was under fire..
Even though some of the units get stuck on trees like Anssi said, the bonus to the morale of your troops is significant if they are in close formation.
I guess it depends as well on the type of units in question.
Stazbumpa: I always thought they did impede your own arrow fire but I am not sure.
