That hasn't had a sequel....

Saw this question on another forum, generated a pretty good discussion.

The only ones that most folk could agree on where...

Mafia

and

Grim Fandango

People also mentioned Fable and Far Cry, but they're both too recent IMO.

Planescape Torment? Well, maybe I'm cheating here, as although it is very highly critically acclaimed, personally I don't actually think it is very good (too morbid and grungy for my taste).

It may be premature, but I would also mention Vampire Bloodlines - absolutely outstanding game, unlikely to get a sequel because it bankrupted the company that made it.

No, I think you have a good point - nearly all really good games either have sequels or are themselves sequels. Of course, there are quite some very good sequels that have not spawned further ones in the series - Imperialism 2 and System Shock 2 come to mind.

Americas Army has no sequel, though it keeps getting patched.

Starcraft is not really a sequel or has one either. Yet.

Wasn't bloodlines it's self a sequel ?

Depends on what you call a sequel, there was no sequel to ATF(Advanced Tactical Fighters) though Janes´ Fighters Anthology looks too similar to not have the same engine, I think. If you say same engine, different name is a sequel, then Hidden and Dangerous 2 would be a sequel to Mafia.:dizzy2:

Because that can´t be, I agree on Mafia.~D

And I really hope you´re not implying that all sequels were bad(don´t think so, just in case...)

Tribes 2. That definately deserved a sequel.

And don't mention Tribes: Vengeance. For one that was a prequel, but it was so crap it has been disowned as a tribes game by most of the community.

Yes, I suppose it was. But Vampire Redemption was made by a different company and I gather it was mainly a kind of hack n slash thing. The beauty of Bloodlines is all the non-hack n slash content - the NPC characters, the sidequests, the atmosphere and immersion, the character development possibilities etc. (When it reverts to linear hack and slash at the end, it gets dull.)

Do expansion packs count as sequels?

Armed and Dangerous. Short, 3rd-person shooter, hilarious. Get it for the humor, not the graphics (not too good) nor the gameplay (OK). It is funny.

That was definitely an outstanding game as well. I havent felt that level of immersion in a game since. The haunted hotel area freaked me out the first time through.

"When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ball-point pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300 C.

The Russians used a pencil."

I hate to go off-topic, but Zalmoxis, are you Russian? Because that is why I love Russia. :laugh4:

The haunted hotel area freaked me out the first time through.Me too. I literally felt a tingle down my spine and I clearly remember thinking, 'Wow, it isn't just a cliche!' I loitered in some of the rooms, just to savour the feeling. And the basement, with that boiler room! Awesome!

Somebody must own the rights to the game, now, even if it is just a creditor. It would be madness for them not to do something with it, IMHO.

Strife! It's a game from 1996 and truly an amazing game for it's time!
It's an action/rpg with an excellent story and gameplay (I.M.O.)! You can for example use a certain device which when deployed acts as a teleporter through which allied soldiers/rebels come and aid you in battle. I thought that was great! The voice acting is also done really good! It's a shooter unlike any I have ever played till this day, non seem to be able to compete with it. Ah.. the nostalgia just thinking about it!

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/strife/ - Gamespot rated this game waaayyyy too low!

Don't think that counts, its just another Civ game by Firaxis, but set in space

(btw when I say "just", I'm not dissing the game, its one of my favourites of all time)

Severance Blade of Darkness. Great physics, good story (somewhat cliche), cool characters and awesome combat.

Perhaps Arcanum, good RPG in orignal setting, kinda Fallout meets D&D.

Great physics, good story (somewhat cliche), cool characters and awesome combat.Ya know, I was just playing that again a few days ago- the graphics have held up very well considering how old it is. I thought it was a unique approach to hack&slash- too bad there aren't more like it.

Carriers at War - a great game for the Commodore 64 from about 1988!! It was about the carrier battles in the Pacific and was magnificent. I am constantly amazed that there is not a modern day equivalient - the subject is just made for computer gaming. The nearest equivalent tends to be flight sims with a Pacific flavour - nobody does a strategic/ tactical game a la Total War - shame, shame, shame

By the way, good to see some praise for Alpha Centuri - an excellent game - I had many a fine hour with Susan the Terrible - my spartan leader.:dizzy2:

Spy vs Spy was a ZX Spectrum game in the mid 80s, way before NES. And I'm pretty sure there was a Spy vs Spy 2 on the PC in the late 90s.

Outcast. Stunning game, really deserved a sequel.

Sadly cancelled. I made the mistake of ignoring this game untill recently because of the pixelated low resolution graphics (hey I just bought my voodoo and quake 2 was there), and I have to say this is one of the best adventuregames ever. The music is a bit heavy, almost vulgar sometimes, but the gameworld is totally convincing. Really a game to sink your teeth in and enjoy the meal, even if the main character was a bit annoying.

I doubt our favourite femme fatale will be in it, but the term 'spiritual succesor of system shock 2' has me dripping with anticipation. Little Fragony's need lots of meat. It is made by the same people, with these graphics I am not sure if I will ever recover. If there is any game that I would love to get my hands on, this one would be it.

Serious? But she got away...

It would be repeating the biggest shock in videogame history ever if she joined the fray, it could be nowhere as dramatic as that particular scene where she shows up in part deux. Maybe some references to catidel station and the von Braun and what happened there, but I think a new story would be better. Since they call it a spiritual succesor I think that is what they are doing. Maybe for the better, that insane metal voice still haunts me :sweatdrop:

I dont think i ever realy played it,
I already had aoe.

And some other game i really liked...
I dont think i remember its name.

7 kingdoms ancient advisarys ?

that was a good game.
As well as the usual RTS game,
You had to build things next to the gray peopls buildings. then theyd see you were protecting them and become people you controlled.

I dont know if it had a sequel.
And maby ive got the name wrong any way.

Aw, no one played Base Wars?! I'll have to elaborate myself.

I can't remember if you're a baseball mang or not, Zorba, but it's a baseball game. Only picture this: all the times are entirely composed of androids. Beyond the normal, bipedal robot, there's a robot with different lower torsos - a unicycle wheel (think one-wheeled motorbike), tank treads, and a hoverbot. The game is played as normal, except when a runner arrives at a base where he would otherwise be tagged. Instead of being called out, the two robots fight it out. If the runner wins, he's safe and can keep running. If he loses, he's out.

The game supports several pre-made teams, two custom ones, two-player multiplayer and a season mode where you can trade for, upgrade and purchase new gear (extendo-fists, laser guns, techno-swords...) for your team.

Aaand it's on the NES.

Historyline 1914-1918 by BlueByte. Though technically that was kind of an evolution of the Battle Isle series. I was hoping they would make a "Historyline" series out of that, but it never happened.

There's debate over the quality of Evil Genius, but I thought it was an entertaining game and it won't be getting a sequel.

Temple of Elemental Evil is also debatable. Easily the truest D&D conversion ever made for the PC, though so horribly bugged that it nearly impossible to finish. As with Bloodlines, it won't be getting a sequel since Troika went belly up.

But so horribly boring, I found. It reminded me that what made D&D pen and paper fun was interacting with your friends. Hacking and slashing alone becomes just mind-numbing. The best D&D type games - BG2, KOTOR, PST etc- take the rules set to get solid game mechanics but focus on quests, characterisation, story and atmosphere to make them come alive.

I am still amazed that Troika could produce a game with rock solid mechanics but no character (ToEE) and games that oozed character but had dodgy mechanics (Arcanum). With Vampires, they finally got the porridge just right and were rewarded by Goldilocks, the dumb consumer, breaking their company.

Though largely the fault of their production companies, Vampire and ToEE were both so horribly bug-ridden that it's not surprising they went under. I guess I have a fondness for 2D top down view D&D RPGs. I wish everything could be the Baldur's Gate games. Easily the most entertaining gaming experience I've ever had was playing BG right through from the first through the second with both expansions. Few games capture such an epic storyline.

Eternal Darkness : Sanity's Requiem. There was rumors about a sequel called Eternal Darkness : Sanity's Redeption, mainly because a hidden cutscene was a real preview. Yet, and unhappilly, nothing showed up lately. Dunno what happened to Silicon Knights, but it's impossible to send them any mail.

I think the guy didn't call it TA II simply because the name was copyrighted.

I believe it is still planned for release, at least I hope it is. Great game indeed, just so .... evil. A it low on challenge later on but that didn't stop me from having to dread each new area I had to beat just because of these horrible sounds.

btw, you may like the Silent Hill series if you liked Eternal Darkness. Not quite in the same lague, but it is entertaining and deliciously sick.
