how do you build forts? well actually what are the conditions for building forts. i've done it before just everytime i have a army out of my towns the building selection thing is empty.

i've just started my 1st campaign and need to build forts in the mountain passes coz i'm at war with Germainia, they directly north of me.

* You need at least 500 denarii to construct one
* Only generals (IE family members) can construct forts or watchtowers
* You cannot build a fort on certain terrain types, EG river crossings (fords), bridges etc
* If you abandon the fort but wish to keep it, you must leave at least one unit as a garrison to avoid the fort from being pulled down
* A fort can hold out for a maximum of 3 turns during a siege
* A fort defences are pretty minimal - all you get is usually a defensive tower at each corner of the fort (so 4 in total)
* Use forts to stranglehold mountain passes, bottlenecks and other strategic positions on the campaign map

Absolutely correct and complete answer. Just one sidenote:
* A spy or similar unit inside of the fort is enough to keep a fort on the map when you don't have a regular garrison there. Only usefull, when you need your garrison elswhere for some tick and want to keep the benefit of your 500 Denari.

This made my game crash once, over and over again.

The Greeks had a spy in a fort.
When I destroyed their faction, the next turn the game crashed.
After a hell of a lot searching, wondering and not to mention a hole lot of swearing I found out the little spy was the cause.
Needles to say I nuked the bastard!
