Hi everyone,

Recently I played a Late Campaign, using the Italians and I managed to take all the provinces of the Papacy. Still, in the next round the Pope reappers in "my" taken province.

Is this because the Papacy in MTW is hard-coded? That is it is automatically regenerated or is it simply a bug?

Just wondering if this has happened to anybody else.

Thanks,

I believe that its hardcoded for the Pope Faction. Thought I read that somewhere. After his elemination he will appear in 20 years. Keeps the crusades working.

Yes, you can never eliminate the pope. This is also being discussed in several other threads at the moment. You might want to take a minute to look around. There's a lot more details and advice to be had, already posted.

Every time Pope is more and more stronger when is backed. I remember that he came with four full stacks of Swiss Pikemen, Swiss Halbedirs, Royal Knights, Arbalesters, Pavise Crossbowmen, Halberdirs, CMAA, Chivalric Seargants etc in my Serbian campaighn (xl mod). It was one hour horror battle.

Ouch, Duke; that's gotta be about the nastiest Papal army I've ever even heard of, much less actually seen. ~ There's a good reason I usually leave taking him out for last! I might occasionally invade Rome and kill him off to get rid of an excommunication, but I always withdraw from the Papal lands afterwards.

If you want to keep the Italian peninsula then you should destroy all the troop training buildings in the Papal States, Naples, Rome and Tuscany (where the pope may reapear).

This way his army will be low teched (for papal standards): Feudal knights, passive arbalesters, feudal men at arms and feudal sgts. mostly.

I'd build those provinces up to a fortress with siege cannons and then inmediatly destroy the master foundry (to avoid papal artillery). Then garrison it with two chivalric knights (upgraded if possible), the pope will assault the castle but the footknights will keep everything he has at bay.
