View Full Version : Troop movement

Just started playing STW it's great, but 1 problem. When I move my troops using alt. click they move further than they should.

There's nothing worse than trying to do some quick deployment adjustments in front of the enemy, only to see your men start to blissfuly march to a point behind that defensive line as if it wasn't there.

I think i've got the right settings in options for my video card, if not what should I put them on for a 16mb voodoo3 3000

When you do a group move, you're positioning the center of the group. It's not clear exactly where this center spot is located. You end up either being very conservative or having your front units advance too far. What I do is group my units into several lines, and then move the lines. The center of a line is right on the line.

That's a good idea Puzz.Controlled troop movement is,IMHO,the hardest part of the game.I think it contributes to the number of players online that are referred to as campers.Controlling your troops when attacking is not easy and if you are used to the single player game you get lazy and use the pause button to coordinate your attack.
Watching some of the better players in the multiplayer game,as they shred my troops into
a mass rout, you realize you have some work to do.My advice would be to REMOVE THE PAUSE BUTTON,and not use it during single player battles.Believe me I'm speaking from experience.

Actually, I think I have the same problem as Tone-san. Whenever I try to Alt-move a unit somewhere, it goes where it's supposed to without problem. However, when I change my mind and Alt-click them to go somewhere else, the game thinks I clicked an inch or two higher than I actually did. (This is a major bummer on hilly maps, the deviation tends to be a matter of miles.)

How I cope with it: every time you change your mind, STOP the unit by pressing the Backspace key, then give the new order. It's sometimes hard to remember if you're in a hurry, but I usually manage. It takes practice, but so does everything else.

This actually seems to be a problem for computers with small video cards - both my brothers have the problem that on higher resolutions if you click on a location for a unit, they actually carry on for another few hundred metres (check this out by pressing the space bar to see where you clicked and where they're ACTUALLY going). My advice is to decrease the battlefield resolution, and even go onto widescreen mode - fiddle around with the software/hardware driver modes too and see if any make any difference. Either that or get a bigger video card! - saying that I went through a phase of having this problem when I tried to move my whole army at once - i'd try and move them a few yards forward and they'd try and walk off the map! - then it stopped doing it - wierd huh?
I imagine someone like Erado San is the man to ask on this one (check his website)

Yah, Anssi's solution is the same I use. If you don't halt their movement first the new posstion can be far and away from the point you actually wished.

Thanks guys, i'll get practicing.

I've already noticed this camping thing. Fair enough if your heavily outnumbered but who the hell gets enjoyment out of sitting on a hill and firing arrows every game.

Anssi and ShaiHulud, I don't think I've seen this mispositioning problem when moving single units that are already moving, but I don't do that very often ether. Positioning on hilly maps can be difficult. I use V3/3000 and Voodoo Banshee before that with 800x600 screen size. Both are 16 MB video cards.

You do get into problems moving groups if you don't let them arrive at the destination. The units will be out of alignment. I'll often redraw a group during the battle. However, you can get to a point in the battle where the group won't redraw properly. The units will appear scatered around when you press the space bar. I usually don't have time to figure out which unit(s) are preventing the redraw.

I have the same problem with the ALT+click, and I found out that if you alt-click the same position repeatedly the final position for your unit will move further and further away. Has it really something to do with my graphics-card??

Hito, it might.

Sadly there is no general fix for that problem, nor does everybody using more or less the same specs experience it. It does happen on older/smaller/cheaper cards. Some solve it by using other drivers, some solve it by adjusting the AGP aperture size, some never solve it at all.

Good Luck!
