has anyone noticed how much these guys rock? i just played my first custom battle, i used mostly mediocre getian troops (komatai, four phalanx units, and both types of archers) against a huge aedui army with many powerful units including a unit of those crazy naked guys. in front of my four phalanx units which formed the centre of my army i had 2 units of komatai in loose formation. when the gallic charge came, with the gaesetae(sp?) leading the way, they ran into my komatai (i had taken them off skirmish mode) and were forced to engage them rather then deliver their famous charge into my phalanx, which could very well have succeeded in breaking the phalanx. my 2 units of komatai decided to fight the gauls to the death, and they wreaked havoc with their wickedly curved blades, slaying many of the gallic warriors before i moved my phalanx's into play. deprived of their charge, the gauls were no match for my phalanx, especially after my komatai and those archers with the longswords won the fight on the flanks and came around from behind. most of the gauls also fought to the death, but they seemed no match for my fearsome getians.

getians rock.

Yes playing as Gatai is GREAT.
I must say that this is my best campaigne ever.
And i think there is good posibility i can loose it. And not becouse of difficult starting posision. I am 27 years in the game and I was quite developed, I onwed 7 provinces (now i own 9 but will lose 3 of them soon). But then 5 years ago Romans who somehow are in peace with everyone decided that they want my land badly.
And to my surprise Romans are bahaving like romans.
I was waging 5 year war with them in the dorstep of my homland. For four years they kept sending 2 stacks. It was bloody war. I had to sold many of my buildings just to raise anough cash to keep my army in fighting condition.
When i finaly manage to bit them and went for offensive what they did? They send assasin to kill my leader, who was wooping theyr ass and was symbol of gattai resistent. And now they are counter attacking. In offensive i had to deconcentrate my army and i was cought of guard.
You woop they asses and they just rise more legions and go afther you, i guess i know how Hannibal mus have felt.

And Pontus my other enemy from witch i captured Tylis and Byzantium once (lost few years ago when i had to concentrate on defending homeland) is coming for me from the south.
I feel like i will have to taste morveles of protectorate and hope that Romans will keep they word. But i will not go down withought a fight.

I fought the Romans once when I was playing with Sweboz. Rome mowed my armies down one by one. They had 3 fully stacked legions advancing into my territory. I tried to flank the early-triarii and got surrounded by princeps and hastati. I was pinned down. My general unit was the only group that put up a fight. The rest of my forces routed. They blitzkrieged my land, literally. THey just took my provinces like they already owned them!

It was a nightmare, but welcomed nonetheless. I have not lost this bad in a RTW game ever!

The loss was especially humilating since I was creating +2 exp troops and Rome does not have that function (building bug).

My men had more experience, but fighting a phalanx with highly moblie javelin throwers was too much for my scruffy german army. Princeps with early triarii = unstoppable.

I recall wiping out Aedui and Averni forces with ease when I played as the Romans. I was taking loses under a 100 men while killing 2000 of theirs. Perhaps Barbarian forces are poorly balanced against roman? Iberia kicked the crap out of me in the end. Their infantry never rout- silver and gold chevron army, fully stacked, and I was done.

I agree that the Romans are tough - as Aedui, after crushing the Arverni, I was recently fighting them

My tactics basically revolved around the mala gaeroas in the centre holding off the Principes and hastati while a couple of units of Gaesatae flank them. They sent a lot of men at me and though I was crushing them in Italy, they bribed the settlements behind me and cut off any supplies.

Eventually I began hiring Samnites to fill the gap left by the deaths of my gaeroas. The Romans are tough but the simple hammer-and-anvil tactic can break them.

My most entertaining battle of the antiRoma campaign occurred after I botched my tactics and four units of gold chevron gaesatae were surrounded by the entire Roman triarii and principes army.

Poor Romani never stood a chance - ~D

I am now being attacked by the Sweboz and the Epeirotes a year after defeating Rome, and I expect to be fighting the Iberians the moment they take the last Karthadastim city in Hispania. I have only one small semi-professional army left and it's got to break through a lot of rebels before going to help repel the evil Sweboz.

I love this mod.

Have you tired playing on campign difficulty medium I find its much better you can actually afford some good troops the AI isnt as aggressive though and every now and then I've come across a stack of slingers an peltasts but that happens on VH as well :)
