To wedge or not to wedge..that is my question

I was wondering how effective wedge formation is when your units charge. Does it depend on whether they are mounted or foot units, or whether you're flanking or not??

I've tried both, but have generally reverted to charging on a wider front with close formation.

Yeah, it's +3 attack -3 defense so there isn't any advantage to using it in a head on charge. With a wider front on the other hand you get a better charge bonus. If I have time, I've used it it with ya, ys, and sa when attacking another unit from the rear as the unit doesn't defend itself for a little while. Usually not worth the bother though.

A weak or fatigued unit can benefit from a wedge when performing a rear charge.

Like Sasaki said, a wide formation is a better option when doing a frontal charge. However, against the rear of a pinned unit it can be very effective, especially when the unit is wavering. Also, by switching from close formation to wedge you quickly turn a line into a collumn (sort of) that can insert itself into gaps in the enemy line. A wedge is more manoevrable than a wide, close formation as well.

I do use wedge on some occasions, but not much. As Sasaki sais it's not worth the bother most of the time. In later stages of battle I don't have time to get them back to normal setting and they end up dead. I prefer using a long line, but indeed that's less manouverable.

Dam I had no idea. I often wedge charged down hills. I would then even them out. I thought it was good for breaking up a unit. At least from behind it is still good.

I've been trying this out......sending a single unit of CA's as a fast flank to harass and hopefully vapourise approaching enemy taishos when I've been defending.......using the wedge to help weave in and out was very effective.
