View Full Version : Unit Movement
Dont know if this was covered and if it was Im sorry but:
Does it seem like in some areas you can march huge amounts, but in other areas your men are forced to a crawl? Is this a bug or was it designed to be this way because of terrain/whatever?
By the way, this is without any penalties against movement or bonuses to movement.

There is restricted movement based on the season. Summer in desert areas and winter in most others. That might be what you are experiencing.
well... spring summer fall
I can understand the different climates but its odd how it can take 3 turns to march all of italy, but greece can be journeyed in 2

If your trudging through 4ft of snow, you could hypothetically spend 30 turns getting through Italy.
..and I think some generals travel further than others given their traits.

Yes, check your Generals traits at any time. If you have marched him for a couple turns straight, he will have the Forced Marching trait, which limits movement by 10%. Also, a general can be in Under the Wheather, which restricts movement even more. Mostly likely you are just experiencing season restrictions. Just because it is summer does not mean movement will not be restricted. As it says under a General's traits, if it is summer, movement restrictions will occur in arid regions.

The "Under the Wheather" trait can get worse though I think.
If you don't let them rest a bit it'll change to "Tired" then "Exhausted" and finally "On His Deathbed"
The first time I noticed the "On His Deathbed" trait I was like WTF?? ~
I never got the On his death bed trait, the worst I got was Wearied
When one of my generals acquire a trait such as tired of forced marching, I march them 1 space less of full distance and normally one of the traits or possibly both go away/become reduced
I jus thought that armies could march much farther in shorter amounts of time... couldn't an army march from rome to Segestica/Segesta (whichever one it is) in a day or some such? I know they could sail to Carthage over night if the weather was fair. I just think they should have higher movement rates.

You fellas are actually talking about 2 separate traits.
The Tired trait can develop into Wearied and Exhausted (giving fertility and management penalties). This represents a guy who's been marching too hard. Resting or marching less, as soibean suggests, should reduce this over time.
The PoorHealth trait has levels "Under the Weather", "Confined to Bed", and "On his deathbed". This can be gained during winter (especially if your general is caught out in the open), and affects hit points, movement, and personal security. Resting will usually result in a full recovery by next turn, but weak generals may stay sick for a long time.

I think this can be modded in descr_character.txt, by changing the "action points". I think if you go over 100, though, there's a problem. This will take effect for generals, captains, spies, diplomats, infantry, cavalry, artillery, everybody. In EB, our traits give diplomats big movement boosts, followed by spies and assassins. Generals get a boost, as well, and admirals who have at least 1 star of command. Captains can't get traits, so the only fix is adjusting the action points.

Or die. My general got Confined to Bed trait (i think, it gave him - 30% movment). But i couldnt rest him. It was in the middle of campaigne and he had to march fast and far. He died in the next turn, but he was 58-60 by that time.

I'm sorry, but this was the funniest thing I read yesterday. :laugh4: I'm a sadistic man.
