View Full Version : The greatest thing I've ever done
Don Corleone

I'd like to introduce you all to the most amazing, incredible person I've ever had the fortune to meet. Jillian Margaret Harris was born at 5:33PM January 20th, 2006 (3 weeks early). After an incredibly difficult delivery (30 hours, capped with an emergency c-section), the strongest toughest person I've ever seen or heard of, my wife, delivered this truly phenomenal little girl into our lives. Please find attached a couple of photos. For those that are interested, I put some more pictures of Jillian into my wife's blog, which we'll be getting squared away once I get enough time to breathe and look around (almost 1 week and I still haven't had time to call all the family or start visits). I know the nursery looks a little sparse, but I drafted some excellent friends I have and we assembled the furniture, bedding and clothing in an astounding 4 hours Sunday afternoon when Mom & baby were resting. If I'm not around so much anymore, please don't take it personally. A beautiful young lady has stolen my heart away...

Before anyone says something that might get them in deep doo-doo, no my daughter is not a hermaphrodite. That yellow thing in the first picture is the clip on the umbilical cord.

Don, don't take this personally, but you put too much of your life on the internet. I guess I can understand around here, where the atmosphere is friendy, but I still really think you should be careful about this stuff.

I don't take it personally Zorba. I've thought about what you say before, and at the end of the day, I figure how is announcing her birth online any more or less risky then announcing her birth in the newspaper (which unless I'm mistaken, you don't get much say over). I appreciate the concern.

Let's see you get 2 hours of sleep a night for a week and how good your typing skills are. :dizzy2: I meant "I hear what you are saying (now) and I have thought of that before". You raise a valid concern, but at the end of the day, if some whack job wants to find you, they will. You can't live your life around what they might do. And I guess you've never seen me post in one of the Backroom 2nd ammendment threads. Let's just say ours wouldn't be the best house to try to break into.
Thank you Zorba, Louis & Greg.

Zorba, the thread is times and times more meaningful than "What is Saddam doing right now? YES RIGHT NOW!" and the likes. The community here feels like a "community" indeed rather than where a bunch of time wasters gather - at least it seems so to me. So, I see no reason why DC wouldn't share his happiness with us.
Don, congrats to you, greetings and wishes of quick recovery from such hard hours to Mrs. Corleone, and kisses to the little Bellucci. :balloon2:

Thank you Zorba, Louis & Greg.

Well, I do see your point... I guess this is better, and one helluva lot nicer, than the average backrom thread. I think my issue just comes from the way I was raised; in my father's family (Irish, by the way) people really dodn't talk about any personal business outside of the family.
(But what is this Zorba, Louis and Greg business? I don't know any Louis or Greg...)

Congrats. That's a pretty baby.
I wouldn't say it unless I meant it. Nobody says "That's an ugly baby", they say "nice baby" or some other BS. But she looks like a cutie, all pink and nasty from a vicious entrance into this cold and cruel world.
You're a lucky man. Two arms, two legs, and no complications I assume?

Thank you, thank you everyone.
Jillian had some difficulties with jaundice (caused by a large bruise she received when they tried to use vaccuum extraction) and her lower than average birth weight had us worried. But we got 2 thumbs up from the pediatrician yesterday. 1 week later and she's back up to her birth weight. She's expected to be right at 50% for height & weight once she gets caught up (probably about 3 weeks).
Not that I'm biased or anything, but Jillian is quite alert & precocious for the ripe old age of 1 week. She responds to stimulus in an appropriate fashion, knows Mom, knows Dad. She shows a LOT of curiousity about the world around her, which I was surprised by. I didn't think that she would start looking around and being inquisitive for another couple of weeks.
No long term affects from being premature, and happily, Mrs. C. is about as caught up on the sleep as she can be. My mother has been staying with us and that has been a God send.
BP's post made me laugh, and it actually got me thinking of Luco Brazzi's speech in the wedding scene of the first Godfather "And may their first child be a masculine child". She's not, but it was still funny.
And DA, I really appreciate your comments, and I do know what you mean. I used to say "There's no such thing as an ugly baby". I'm sorry to say, after checking out some of Jillian's nursery mates at the hospital, this is certainly not the case. I also have a 'proud papa' tale to tell....
I was waiting for my wife to come out of the recovery room and head up to ICU (just for monitoring) in the nursery waiting room (where families gather to see the buggers). I was exhausted (I had been up for 2.5 days) but I was terrified they'd head up to ICU without stopping to get me, so I forced myself to stay up and was sprawled on a chair in the corner. Two large families were checking out their respective babies and congratulating each other. Without a peep from me, both families noticed Jillian and immediately turned their attention to 'that beautiful baby in the corner, like a little fairy princess'. Forgot all about their own kids! I can't blame them, my girl is gonna be a looker. She's very, very lucky she favors mama. My wife, when she's not pumped full of magnesium and petocin, which causes you to retain an extra 3 quarts of fluid, is very fetching, and I think Jillian is going to surpass her. In any case, she doesn't have my klingon forehead :wall: , a fact she should thank her lucky stars for every day. :2thumbsup:
Again, thank you all for you kind wishes and I will pass them along to Mrs. Corleone.

Congratulations, ma man! Welcome to the ranks of fatherhood! Take good care of that beautiful young lady (actually, I'm sure there was no need for me to even tell you that). And please give Mrs. Corleone a congratulatory hug from me as well.
One thing I will point out to you:
I would hope that Mrs. Corleone does not see the title of this thread, as she may take exception to it. As Mrs. Goofball is so fond of reminding me when discussing the reproduction process, I didn't really do anything all that hard...

Thank you for the kind thoughts and words everyone. Two weeks later (tomorrow) and all appears to be going quite well. Her weight is up, the jaundice has passed, and the lungs... well, let's just say she favors daddy when she's not pleased. :furious3: For the most part, sleep hasn't been too bad, as I've just ignored my wifes pleas to wake up for nocturnal feedings. Just kidding, but my wife is breastfeeding. The only thing I'm on the hook for is the diaper change which I only get woken up for when necessary. My wife & I have worked out an agreement that since she gets the midnight & 3AM feedings during my worknights, she's going to pump on Thursday & Friday afternoon and I'll take them on Friday & Saturday nights. So I'm a bit crankier than normal on Saturday & Sunday, please understand why. I know, I know, how can I possibly get any crankier... well, you were warned. :skull:
By the way, new photos uploaded to the blog, so more Jilly-bean for all. ~:)
