View Full Version : Will you switch to MTW II ?
I have played hundreds of hours of MTW and I can honestly say I can play a few hundred more with mods available. So my question to the community is, when MTW2 comes out do you scrap the original?
I for one will probably wait for MTW2 to be out a while before I pick it up, being very happy with the original nothing has yet to inspire me (i know its early yet) to gear up for this new release and throw MTW to the scrap heap.

i'm so occupied and involved and entertained by MTW that i probably wouldn't switch for years...i got RTW for Xmas and haven't even opened the box yet.
i'll certainly wait for a review(s) on these forums before i switch as well.

No need to switch, I have RTW and MTW both installed now too.

I'm looking forward to MTW2, and hoping that they get it right. I started the Total War series somewhat slowly with STW, moved on to MTW and then VI (and am lovin it!), but when I bought RTW it was a disappointment. I quickly went back to MTW+VI, and various mods are keeping me interested. If MTW2 isn't a better game than RTW, I'll be sticking with MTW for years to come.

I dont have RTW, not a time period I am really interested in. I played STW for some time but my gaming time has been devouted primarily to MTW and VI. I have heard (here and elsewhere) some pretty negative stuff on RTW and because of that I think MTW2 deserves to be in the stores and tested by the populace before it makes it on my PC.
Besides MTW VI with mods is an excellent game, no real need to switch at this point. Without a more complex diplomacy system I dont really see how much more can be improved (some AI tweeks of course). Screen shoots look nice and all but if the play is the same its not enough to get me to switch soely on that.
I won't be buying Medieval 2 until after I've read the reviews *and* gleaned the reaction of people here at the Org. If the AI isn't at least as good as its older brother, then I will continue to play the original MTW until at least the 5th Total War game is released.
[EDIT] I should add that I *am* really looking forward to Medieval 2. It's just that I don't have the blind faith in CA that I used to have before Rome.....
hi i have MTW and rome and Barbarian i have about 15 gig of total war on my PC but i will put MTW 2 on also but my favorite will still be MTW with the mods i just love it
I too will be waiting to see what people think, but I think I will buy it once the expansion arrives, because at that point it will be properly balanced and patched. I wish I had done that with R:TW.

As far as RTW that seems to be the concensus, wishing they had waited. It just seems that RTW took us more in the direction of superior graphics, as opposed to superior game play.

hmm i probably will provided it works on my computer...

I'll be waiting to hear what the reviews of the game will be before I even think about buying it.
So far, all I see are some pretty screenshots.
I haven't bought RTW because of all the problems with it...
I love MTW:VI, and with all the mods available for it, it will remain my game of choice for a loooong time to come...

I have had MTW for over a year now but have only finished two of my campaigns (only 60% too) and have only tried out about eight factions. I am currently in my first GA mode campaign and haven't played the game anywhere near long enough to make me consider dumping it so soon. I probably will wait a while before getting MTW2.
I will probably have MTW, RTW, and MTW2 loaded on my machine(s). Since I will probably be getting a new boxen sometime this year, MTW 1 will probably only stay to my current one, mainly because my new machine will have a fancy nVidia card (current card is an ATI Radeon) and the campaign won't run on it, damn drivers...
What kind of question is that? Would you trade in your Firebird for a Lamborghini? Hell yes!
What kind of question is that? One I had really hoped you would answer Vladimir, I cant speak for everyone else, but I certainly was waiting with great anticipation as to your reply.

My issue is I am due to upgrade the PC in 07, been running a crappy E machine for a few years now that I got for 350. Fine machine but not high end. (cant run RTW on it...).
So I dont know if I fancy spending more then 500 clams on a new machine to have the best graphics, gaming is a hobby for me and with MTW2 it appears that PC performace will be an issue. So for those of us on older machines its a potential considerable investment.
So my question to the community is, when MTW2 comes out do you scrap the original?
Yes, yes I will. Oh, I have been playing other games because of the Nvidia conflict. Ugggg. I actually fried my motherboard switching cards just to play this game.

Haven't played MTW in a while, work and three buggy computers don't help. I haven't played all the factions either, but I would be willing to compare the two (after I buy a new PC this year, keep your fingers crossed).

I will buy MTWII but I don't think I'll ditch the original, especially with Viking Invasion.

What happened with your secondary PCI bus ATI Radeon 9250 graphics card? I thought that solved all your MTW display glitches.
I did, but I took it out to put in a TV tuner card. It worked fine but I needed a TIVO more. Then, to play my game I pulled out the TV Tuner card. Funny, for some reason taking out the Modem wasn't pausible because the TV Tuner card and the PCI GFX card wanted a better slot and refused to run on anything down the bus. WHich is extremely odd.
I will definently switch over to Medieval: Total War II because I'm ready for the better graphics and better A.I.

Like many here, my first move will be to wait and hear what others here on the forums have to say. If it is a disappointment (which I certainly hope won't be the case) I'll wait until a mod has established it as a great game, then buy it and download the mod from the beginning. If it passes muster to begin with I'm all over it.
Either way though part of the timing will depend on when I can afford a computer capable of running it, and I doubt I will ditch MTW1 as it'll still run fine on this old thing, and it's still a great game (of course I still play games as old as Diablo II and occasionally even AoE II, so maybe I'm just old-fashioned!).

I still play Dark Forces and X-Wing, you're not old fashioned.
I agree, not old fashioned just good taste in games. So it seems the concensus is that people will be buying it after some press and user write ups.
I might do the same, but in the end I will have to buy a new PC to play it due to the graphics. I guess my real quandry with the intial question post was do you think the game play is going to be signifigantly enhanced?
More papal control, more diplomacy, naval battles are what it would really take to get me to switch. If the games are going to be essentially the same (as far as gameplay) but with better graphics, I can live with MTW VI.

Im ready for a better A.I. too; sadly, i have been ready for it since RTW was announced... and im still waiting for it...
Let's hope we get it this time. I would really love a revamped, challenging turkish campaign in MTW2! :charge:

Like others I'm going to hold back with reservation until MTW2 is proven to be a worthy successor. MTW is nearly perfect already, just needs a few additions to the battleground controls and a better diplomacy system. I wish the campaign map would actually be a 3D map instead of a Civilisation/Lords of Magic 3D landscape.
I'm switchin' for sure. I'm (hopefully) building a new computer this summer - if DX10 comes out, that is. If not, I'll just wait until that and Longhorn do, then build a comp and run M2TW on DX9 emulation, as it certainly doesn't look like it'll be a DX10 game. Either way, I hope to render those 10,000 troops at a buttery 40+ FPS. If the only game I ever played was MTW, I might not switch, but I'm a big fan of Day of Defeat and Half-Life 2 and other shooters, and those demand a pretty beefy rig to run.

I, like many others, will wait - mainly as I haven't lost interest in MTW/VI yet. Also I want to do RTW/BI and I haven't even brought those yet. The other big reason to wait is that the price comes down so quickly - if you brought RTW and BI as new it cost you over £50 - but the combo set is out now for as low as £23 - so, being a cheapskate, i will wait a bit!!

Like many others, I may have to wait for a new computer to be able to play it. The games I do play are fairly old, so I'm happy with what I have.
If the AI is much better than MTW, and the diplomacy is varied and cleverly implemented to give many more options, I will probably be tempted to make the move. The eye candy looks lovely, but I can live without it.
None of this is what CA wants to hear of course, as devotees saying 'wait-and-see' doesn't pay the bills...but then the bills I have to pay don't allow for buying a new computer to play a game
I hope CA reads this - ONLY IF THE AI IS STABLE AND THEY OFFER AT LEAST SOME TYPE OF CAMPAIGN MULTIPLAYER!!!!!!!!
LETS ALL GET ONE THING STRAIGHT AND SUM UP EVERYTHING I HAVE EVER READ HERE.
Players perfer stable AI, better multiplayer options, and replayability OVER graphics ANYDAY. Right?
Only if the battlefield AI can give my generals fits, while keeping me happy.

I'm sticking with MTW/STW until I've seen all the reviews and comments. RTW was disappointing for me, so I for one will be waiting. Also I'd probably need a better graphics card as RTW is slow as it is.

By the time MTW2 comes out, I might be able to get a new rig.
Though I don't think I'll get it immediately. I'll wait for others to bravely go forward first. Need AI first and foremost, followed by... more AI. And a few niceties.
MTW AI isn't awesome, but I find it easier to overlook its flaws compared to RTW. :sweatdrop:
Yeah, if you want more information on MTW 2, I have the PCGAMER article. Just IM me and I will send you a copy of it. Due to powerhappy admins, I can't post it out here anymore. Personally, I had my doubts until I read the article. It looks like I will be an early adapter.

Yeah, down with the man. Damn Book Burners.
I´ll most definitely not switch, as in get rid of MTW. I never, ever got rid of any old game I bought and still play Jagged Alliance, UFO Enemy Unknown, Master of Magic and so on. Maybe I´ll get it, most likely rent it at a video store and test it a weekend or something.

Sorry, we staff have quota to upkeep. At least 5 warnings a week for junior staff and 10 for senior staff. I'm so ancient I have to award at least 15 warnings each week.
If I don't meet my quota, I don't get paid...

I have Shogan TW, Rome TW & Medieval TW all installed, but i only ever play Medieval TW. If I play Medieval TW II all depends on the campaign map, ill wait a couple of weeks for the game to come out, if it has the RTW style maps, then I probably wont get it. If it has the same style map as MTW has then ill be straight down to the shops!
I Hate the RTW Maps :furious3:

I was soo disappointed with what they did in RTW that I will wait til the reviews, bug reports, AI evaluations, etc. are in. As someone said above, after an ex pac and bug fixes I'll keep an eye on the bargain bins.

I gave VI a try after a year or two of not playing it. It was sort of embarrassing. I'm very much looking forward to MTW2.
I'm convinced that CA won't mess it up.

Your optomism is refreshing. I didnt go with RTW because it would take a new rig to play it. The way the Total War series has gone you really need high end rigs to play. I can live with STW graphics for enhanced game play(diplomacy) and better AI.
Dont see that happening, Im sure it will be a fine game, win most of the awards that are out there, but not play on half the rigs that the other TW series play on.

I think what will disappoint me the most is if CA listens to much to the crowd at the official forums. Everytime I go to take a gander of the suggestions being put up my eyes bleed.

Well iwill get it and if it runs ok on my PC i would definatly switch.I`ve played 64 games of MTW/VI including some of the BKB factions and i have never won on normal!I am doing much better on RTW/BI and have won a lot of games on medium/medium.I dont want to win every time but it seems pointless slogging away at MTW since i`ve had it since oct 2004!RTW is a much better game i think because the battles dont depend so much on how many stars your general has and you dont get the situation where 500 janisary hv inf take 30 minutes to kill 1 khataphract. Also in RTW a better equipt/armoured army can some times beat a larger army even with a 5 or 6 star general.when i was a table top wargamer 100 years ago i was into the ancient period especially the Greeks/Persians.However ive more intrest now in the medieval period so i wellcome this new game.Of course the big question is will it run.To run RTW ok i`ve set the virtual memory to 1.5 gb and lowered the building detail to lowest although im using the "quality setting with normal unit size.I dont have a 16mb sound card and only 128mb ram so i doubt it will run if they`ve upped the minimum requirements.Still ill get it anyway and when i can afford to upgrade my PC i will.Currently playing my 1st imperial campaign as Macedon and its mindblowing.Have Greece ,Asia Minor,Syria, all the scythian territory. At war with Rome,Germania,Dacia and Carthage.Hate those smug romans with their artillery and pretorian cohorts etc.......thats enough rambling

Same here, Shogun 2 now that would be awesome. I have RTW... plus 5 or so mods to make it interesting after a month. I made the mistake of getting MTW a year after it was released, and then VI also a year after it was released! :embarassed: I regretted that deeply...
So I learned my lesson. RTW came out and I didn't wait for a month before buying it , big mistake :laugh4:. I'm enjoying Rome now that it's all modded up. I hope MTW2 turns out great, and this time I'll wait and see first.
One big Hell Yeah. I will buy the game when it first comes out. After reading the PCGamer article (If you want to read it as well, just PM me) as well as other online articles, it would be lame not too. Even to support CA would make sence and you must love the MTW game, if not then why be on this forum board?
Don't get me wrong, I almost never buy a game when it comes out but the idea to have one of YOUR bishops become the Pope, that alone is worth some foodstamps down.

Yeah, that's right, but it has no chance whatever, unfortunately.. Only a few people (I mean just a small percentage) are interested in the "dark" middle ages, especially if only Japan is gonna be represented.
few inquirer -> miserable sale -> deficit of the project :furious3:
And nowadays money talks everywhere, so we may whistle for it. Although this would be the best pc game of all time...
