Hamlet loses its doorstop delivery after health and safety inspector finds danger at every turn

IN THE peaceful hamlet of Cefn Minog (population: three), nobody will forget the day a clipboard-carrying health and safety inspector visited their mountainside.

Now I really am living in a surrealist Warhol movie.

One of the deadliest obstacles, the inspector concluded, was a stile opposite Bettws Farm, near Abergavenny. Under the heading “harm potential”, the report states: “Slip/trip/fall. Muscle/tendon strains or broken bones, cuts, grazes, bruising. Hit by moving vehicle.” The “probable severity” was listed as “fatality”. William Jackson, 79, who has a pacemaker, was surprised. Across the country lane from the killer stile is the nearest postbox to Mr Jackson’s home. The “VR”* insignia reminds passers-by that it has been there for more than a century, serving farmers through less risk-averse eras. Mr Jackson must plod down a meadow and negotiate the stile to post his letters.

I'm all for protecting workers from accidents and unnecessary risks but this is ridiculous.

*for none commonwealth citizens this stands for Victoria Regina, she died in 1902.

“There is a strong suspicion that these reports are no more than a ruse to avoid making difficult deliveries using health and safety as an excuse.”

Exactly

We get similar here, although it would be worded:"... a ruse to avoid making time-consuming deliveries using health and safety as an excuse.”

They only want our Posty's to spend 30 seconds per delivery; anymore and they start looking for ways to cut times required. Less time = more deliveries per day = fewer posty's to pay and pension = bigger mgt bonuses.

Isn't the Royal Mail all privatised now?

They should go back to having armies of posties, more stringent rules on postal, and let the posties take a risk! Thye should re-nationalise the Royal Mail and make it run without a profit...

they're trying to deny a fairly basic service to Welsh peasants because they're Welsh.

*fume*

:furious3:

oh, I don't really believe that, I'm just playing the race card.

I've noticed it here too. My post used to be here 1130 at the latest, but now it could be later than 1430. The profit may be up but service gets worse every year. :furious3:

Yes. It's this poor, short-sighted leadership from the top.

Perhaps people are willing to pay £5 a year in taxes for a delivery that turns up at a reasonable time.

We don't get ANY delivery here some days now. And if we do it won't turn up before 2pm.
