i can't seem to find an answer for this. can anyone from CA explain why or why not? :help:
- how do i move characters with names like "Antigonos of Sparta"? ie, these names are not just nicknames/epithets addeds to a character after picking up a certain level of trait ("the brave", "the killer", etc)
- how do i move characters with the same name? (particularly for captains and admirals)

Answer to the second question. The engine searches for a character with the provided name from the topleft of the map to the bottomright. If you want your bottomright character to move but there is another character with the same name more to the top then the second one will move. It is a limitation.

The move command doesn't work when you put quotes around the name? Have you tried moving them using the tag names in brackets? Like move_character "Antigonos of_Sparta", if you have the following in your names file:
{Antigonos} Antigonos
{of_Sparta} of Sparta

thanks for the responses
another questions: what about if a character has a non-ASCII letter in their name? ex., "Skílas", where the "í" is not a lowercase latin "i" ("eye") with a simple dot on top, but an accent mark (an "acute", i believe it's called).

You have to look these names up in the names table, like Malrubius said. You'll (probably) find that it reads:
{Skilas} Skílas
