Which is a more sound strategy? More garrison troops and higher taxes or fewer troops and lower taxes? Which yields more money in the long run?

Unless the taxes are going to be more than the upkeep, it's not worth it. Most cities, it's going to be a difference of less than one unit's upkeep, which means unless you're garrisoning with sphendonetai or something, it's almost guaranteed to be a money-losing proposition.

I would say that in 9 out of 10 cases its true.
Better strategy is sending Influencial genarl to city.

Evidently literacy isn't as important these days either.
Actually it is best to run very high taxes with garrisons of your least expensive unit. You'll want to stay on top of those taxes as to keep your pop growth in check. If you dont, you'll end up having a very big mess on your hands with multiple catch 22 scenarios
Spelling errors in a forum does not tell tell much about a person. All it shows is that you did not bother to use a spell checker.
At most, I'll have 2 units of garrison in towns that don't have generals. I noticed that in late games, it's harder to keep high taxes in most provinces. You should always go for generals when you can.
Also, do dimplomats affect the morale within a town?

Exactly, also there are plenty of law/health/happiness increasing buildings in EB that you can use.

No. Spies can cause unrest in enemy settlements. They may also counteract or catch enemy spies in your settlements. Spies are great. :2thumbsup:

Yes spies are great, I use spies and assasins all the time. When I get a new faciton leader I usually get the master of assasins and spy master traits within 10 turns.

Won't be so easy after the patch. :devil: I'm sick of seeing every faction leader get those traits.

Number of men, so don't waste good/expensive troops on garrison duty.

Also cavalry units are smaller than infantry, so avoid keeping them in cities. Better to get the horses out on the field where they can be useful and leave garrison duties to infantry.
Just use cheap troops in your cities, enough cheap ones to keep the little face yellow. If you see the city is in danger of being sieged in the next few turns and you haven't got an army nearby, recruit some good units to put there and if the enemy attack take as many of his men with you in a fight to the death at the town center so that his forces are weaker for when you take the city back.
A combination of cheap skirmishers and cheap infantry can be deadly against the dumb AI... I've turned away invaders with 20:1 odds against me with a couple units of skirmishers and cheap spear infantry.
I just completed an empire-wide overhaul of garrison troops. Playing as the Casse, I replaced all my Lugoae with Caldabre (sp?) and in my Iberian provinces, velites are the order of the day. Ought to save me some bank in the long run.
