Greetings Europa Barbarorum fans!

You might think that now, that the Open Beta is released we settled down for a little -though well earned - rest. Nothing can be further from the truth! With the contribution of our long time and new members we continue to work in earnest for what we think is the greatest mod created.
And now to the point. Creating a mod is not only making models and textures. There are a lot of little things that must be created. Ancillary portraits are amongst them.
As always, historical accuracy is our main concern. We feel obliged to find the most accurate portrait of the ancillary.
Sometimes we are lucky like in the case of my personal favourite, Karneades The Academic:

https://img332.imageshack.us/img332/7765/prew4karneadescyrene7rx.jpg

Or Marcus Porcius Cato Censorius (Cato the Elder):
https://img332.imageshack.us/img332/5387/catocensoriuspreview58fx.jpg

Or Krysipphos.
https://img332.imageshack.us/img332/6074/preview3krysipphos8le.jpg

But sometimes I have difficulties. Often the bust I use is broken. This is Kleanthes of Assos:
https://img310.imageshack.us/img310/3483/preview1kleanthesassos6wz.jpg

Sometimes we have no bust at all, but a better quality drawing helps me a bit like in the case of Eratosthenes of Cyrene:
https://img310.imageshack.us/img310/3585/preview2eretosthenescyrene9uj.jpg

...and there are times when the best quality image looks like this, like of the Gracchi:
https://img408.imageshack.us/img408/1978/gragghipreview73yo.jpg

Sill there are nightmares. He is Kallimachos of Cyrene:
https://img323.imageshack.us/img323/5691/callimachuscyrene2ye.jpg

I hope all of you fans understand now, how very important it is to have pictures for these renown scholars, artists and soldiers of antiquity in order to make our mode more living, but still, historically accurate. So please help us, and contribute on the following link, where I eagerly wait for your help on the matter.
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=60271
Should you feel that a great man of out timeframe (272BC-14AD) is carelessly ignored, and preferably you are in possession of an image on him, please do not hesitate to post it to us, and we promise we will listen. Oh yes, barbarian named ancillaries -also Eastern, or Carthaginian ones- are warmly welcomed!

But only a small minority of our ancillaries are named... there are hundreds of ancillaries in our Ancillary Portrait Catalogue like these:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
We hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s update!

Please note that unless stated otherwise, ALL pictures shown in our previews are of works in progress. We continue to improve on all parts of EB, and we will continue to do so long after our initial release.

Since some areas where these news items are posted cannot handle wide images, we appreciate your restraint from quoting full-size images.

As always, if you have questions or comments, the best place to post them is here, where the EB team is most active:

Europa Barbarorum ORG forum (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=70)

Europa Barbarorum TWC forum (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=31)

We give special thanks to Imageshack (http://www.imageshack.us) that provides us with a simple, foolproof, and free way to show you all these pictures each week.

Have a great day!

Sincerely,

The Europa Barbarorum team.

Simply put: hopefuly yes. And for example for an aged retainer there should be more than one portratis, shouldn't it? :laugh4: Like one for each culture...

Truly EB.

This seems the highest and most appropriate praise that can be rendered, so I will only echo it.

Truly EB.

Just a question: how do you know Karneades has blue eyes?
Just for curiosity, i am sure at 90% you have some source, but anyway i wanted to ask :)

I just don't know. Call this artistic freedom. Somehow light eyed ones were chosen for this preview, and actually a light eye colour on 33x42 pixels looks much more alive.

The attention to the smallest levels of detail is what keeps amazing me about the EB team. Keep up the good work ~:)

Busts really show alot of emotion when you connect them to human faces. I tried one of Gaius Marius(original (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f5/Gaius_Marius.jpg)), this was my result(it still has no nose, though)

yeah. Noses are tricky. one has to draw. Gotta practice.
Advices: if you use photoshop, select face, hair, clothing separately. Use hue/saturation, gradient mixer colour balance (shadows redder, highlights more yellow. Desaturate afterwords. Retuche it and there you go.

Bloody hell. Small things make the difference. Small things with so much detail make it by the bucket load.

Truly EB sums it up. Well done, Forgus.

Just one question. You guys will make images just to the ancillary or for the faction members too?

At this point only for ancillaries. Maybe later I may take a look at the family members too, but I don't think that they are RTW's weekest spot.

Of couse you are right, but maybe inthe future, the family members are not very acuratted and as you guys are changing de UI it would be cool to have new imagens, i can even help if the team wants.

It is now low priority but later we can work on it. Of course all help is welcome. What is your trade?
