Is the revised naval system in EB satisfactory? IMHO both yes and no.

+ I do like that ships can´t be built anywhere due to the lack of tech or resources and the 4 seasons makes movement rates more realistic than a vanilla game.

- I don´t think that the astronomical upkeep costs is realistic though.
Ex: Playing Makedonia I hold all of Greece, the Aegean and Asia Minor and I´m making 20-25k/ turn but only can afford 5 transports. The seas are empty, except an occasional rebel fleet that sails the seas unopposed. Now I could afford some 5 more transports but I rather have a solid economy. At one point I my 5-fleet transports was attacked.... and was sunked instantly: 7.500m. down the drain and another 7.500m. to build 5 new ones. So I tried building the heaviest one I could build at a cost of 11.500m. each!!! not talking about the upkeep/ turn. I sent him against a single pirate boat. Guess what - I lost... eeek!

The naval system seriously needs further tweaking since this is not the way to go. You can´t seriously mean that I´ve to spend 11k on one single battle battleship. Shure, wood was expensive back then and the technology was hard to come by, for some. As a result Poseidon has no boat to play with in EB.

Only 5 transports? :dizzy2: On huge unit settings its something like 300 to 400 ships! Why do you need so many transports?
Its very big fleet. What do you want thousands of ships?

When Macedon was fighting Romans Philip struggled to upkeep small fleet of lemboi (60-100 ships i think). And they where no match to roman Panter fleet (something like 20 ships i bealive).
Fleets where expensive.

Naval combat will be changed. But dont get your hopes up, upkeep/building wont be much lower.

Ship costs will go down, in next patch sth like 10-20%, later more tweaking will be made - light ships will be much cheaper, but big will stay the same. I plan few more interesting features on the ship field, but I won't reveal them (at least not yet).

I'm intrigued about the interesting new features, are they planned for the first patch (whenever it's due) or further down the line?

On the tweaking front I have one major hope. Can we end up with a situation where the player actually has to make a choice as to whether to keep their starting fleet(s). I've played as KH and Casse and it's been a no-brainer: starting fleets have to be disbanded or I spiral into debt at an incredible rate.

I agree that building fleets should be expensive but I'd like to actually see some sort of contest for naval supremacy (and be able to take part in it) throughout the campaign.

I don´t use huge settings so my ships contains 40 men and the upkeep is 1500k per turn. That makes 7.500k per turn right. I was merely stating out that with 20-25k surplus I could easily build 5 more and still have a 12,5-17,5k surplus. I DO have to keep the buildques busy too ;) Not to talk about units too.
Now I don´t mind paying a heafty sum for a really good battleship. Lord knows it wasn´t cheap to build them back in the day. As you guys have stated the naval system is up for a change and transport will be cheaper.. a lot I think.
