Just being an ignorant novice, and too lazy to find out for myself, i was just wondering if historical figures such as Hannibal appear at the appropriate date (around 220 BC i think).

Only as ancillaries. We aren't forcing anyone else to appear later as characters (I don't even know if we could honestly), as the course of history will change as you play.
