Free FPS

I'm looking for a free, downloadable FPS to play. So what's the best one?

I did play America's Army for a while, but then my account started to malfunction and it would be annoying to have to start again from 10 honour, but if there's nothing better I'll go for it.

I've heard of War Rock. Does anyone know if this is better?

Going off-topic, you might consider forking out a little bit of money and trying Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines. It's only about a year old and is selling for really silly prices (£2.95 on amazon.co.uk).

It's an RPG, rather than a shooter really, but uses the Half-Life 2 engine and if you want your vampire can shoot with a decent variety of guns (from a .38 special or shotgun to a Steyr Aug assault rifle or flamethrower).

The best thing about the game, though, is the dialogue, characters and quirky quests. (Early on there's a standout mission through a haunted house.)

There's the wolfenstein ET which is free.

I believe you can download quake I and doom games as freeware now, I might be mistaken.

btw, americas army was just patched today to 2.6 - you might want to check it out again

Personaly I refused to play a game which the army created to attempt to subliminaly get people to join up.
So id say all games are better than AA, for the reson there not a big attempt to get impresionable teenagers to join the army.

I won't debate the rediculousness of that comment on AA; I have my own reasons for disliking AA though. Just eats up too much of my pitiful lappy's memory. And nobody plays my favorite map. :shame:

W:ET is pretty good, and there are one or two good mods, like True Combat: Elite for it.

Has anyone tried War Rock? Is it any good?

There's another thing, Kuma War or something like it that I almost tried, but I had problems installing it (a real pain). Has anyone had luck installing and playing it?

War Rock didn't work for my PC. But the specs are terrible so it's to be expected. I've heard from others that it's "fun and easy".

I think I'll download AA again. I really enjoyed it the last time I had it, but there was a slight problem. I had a so-called advantage on some maps (Bridge Crossing) because my crappy graphics card or whatever didn't always show the fog. So I ended up being able to snipe people when they were techically "out of range".

Seconded, I haven't had time to play it yet but I hear 2 new maps are added to the already varied selection of maps.

I say give it a go, even if you'd have to start at honor 10.

I was away from America's Army for about a year then recently came back to it a bit. I had to do a fresh full install because I had version 2.2 or something like that and there was no patch for my version.

Thankfully, I was able to keep my account with all of it's previously-earned honor points still intact.

As to the question of this thread: free FPS's don't grow on trees, ya know. :laugh4:

Wolf: ET and America's Army are the best ones. I personally can't stand the fake German accents in ET so that's why I don't play it any more. It's a good game except for the incredibly obnoxious fake accents and lack of maps. Although it's nothing at all like America's Army. ET is like an arcade game.

I went back to AA and got my old account back.

I decided to try and get sharpshooter status and do the basic marksmanship training again so I could go and do the sniper training, but it wouldn't update the thing because of a connection problem, and now I can't do it again....

Have no idea what is causing your connection problems while trying to gain marksman status, that just doesn't make sense.

Once you do manage to get it, look out for a Dutch_guy on SF hospital :2thumbsup: , what is your ingame name ?

My return to AA hasn't been pleasant.

I have achieved expert status 5 times on the basic marksmanship course, but every time there has been an error saving. However, when I only achieve sharpshooter, it saves the results fine. I am beginning to feel that the game doesnt want me to become a sniper.

I am also having trouble with punkbuster. Everytime I join a punkbuster server, I am kicked almost immediately. It also tells me that I am being kicked for "an unidentified reason" which is totally retarded because it doesn't tell me what's wrong and I can't fix the problem.
I can suspect that I'm being kicked because I "violate" the rules. My graphics card is very poor, so weather effects (fog etc.) don't always show up in games.

So, at the moment, I'm just getting my game back in some non-punkbuster servers.

I did. It didn't help me much, but yeah I'm pretty sure the problem is with the graphics.

I'll try lowering all the settings, and see if that helps me out. Most are on low already, but I believe some are still on normal.

I think I may have sorted out the punkbuster problem because I got a good 2 hour session in today on a PB map. So we can play any map.

It's really annoying because it means I can't choose my status, or whatever. I like to use the AR, but I can't choose it.

Craterus I'll send you my newly made Xfire address by PM, I usually go on late in the afternoon - about 2000 Dutch time, meaning an hour earlier in Britain - and usually stay on for about an hour. Almost solely on Hospital which is my favorite map and therefor the map which I know best and get my best scores on.
Courtyard is a close second, though the map is quite intimidating if you don't know it well.

As for your problem I have nbo idea what it might be... you might want to try switching from AA browsers to gamespy browsers.
I've been having trouble with connecting to the MBS server - or something like that - lately and I found that switching from AA to gamespy servers helped.

so is it possible for you to not choose a weapon but still play the game, is it the only ''bug'' at the moment ?

Have never heard of this bug, you could simply try reinstalling the game and hope it work then, as long as you remember your account password and name you wont have to do the training missions all over.

If you are unassigned on the weapon class menu, you will be automatically assigned to one of the positions that no-one else wants to do. Generally squad leader.

I'm ok with the regular gun, but I prefer the AR or Sniper. Don't get these very often if I can't pick my weapon.

I play AA too (Bridge mostly). If you treat it as a free MP game rather than the Army's recuiting tools, then it's fun. I like real military theme anyway, game like OFP, First to Fight, COD, ...

If you have UT2004 you could download Red Orchestra. A realistic WW2 mod on the Eastern Front. It won the best unreal mod

Make no mistake: AA is a recruitment tool. It is in no way "subliminal programming", but the intent is most certainly to drum up interest.

Since playing America's Army, I have not once considered becoming a US citizen and joining the American Army. I get killed far too much. And hey, there are people on that game who'll shoot you in the back for your sniper rifle, who knows how bad they are in the army? :laugh4:

As an american citizen I don not feel the need to join the army, if the in-game chat says anything of the army's way of life then I daresay people are joining in numbers at the moment :laugh4:

It's a great game, but the learning curve is steep. When you have it pretty well mastwered though it is an amazing game.

I have it, and it's good fun, alot more detail than many games out there (I'm talking to you, COD and MOH) on graphics. I play as Ratburger, so tell me you're from the org if you see me.

EDIT: BTW, how do you make it so that your screen doesn't go white every time a grenade explodes?

What do you mean by white? If you mean a grenade lands close I think thats normal or is it a bug?

No, whenever a grenade explodes, my whole screen turns white. I was told it's a GFX glitch.

Got it fixed, my crappy comp can't always run motion blur, so I turned it off. Are there any beginner clans to join since I'm not very good?

I suggest playing on the servers and getting friendly with a few clans and then see. Usually that works as you can really see what they are like over time and if you want to be with them

Yeh i know panther you told me a while back in a RO thread, i used to be in RA, but left due to them not being active enough for me, then i just joined 13th on the 10th of Feb, i didnt play in that match. Plus most of us 13th guys are Beta Testing RO :D :D :D :D.
