Hi there!

I have probably missed this in the manual, or in the very useful guides on the forums (I searched for it though), but:

In MTW, how do you replace a province governor with a more useful one? Do you have to disband the unit that was holding the title before you can assign a new governor, or can you simply drag-and-drop the title onto someone else? (I tried the last option, and it didn't work so I'm probably doing things wrong here)

I hope someone can help me out here, thanks for your attention anyway!

You can disband the unit, yes.
OR, if you don't wish to lose the unit, you can drop an emissary onto the governor's unit and strip him of titles. This will understandably reduce his loyalty, but you will find that his title is now available to give to someone else.
As a tip (if you can be bothered to micro-manage!), give titles to units with at least 4 acumen points, and check them every now and then to make sure they haven't dropped in acumen or loyalty.

Aaahhh, I had not thought of the emissary! (Is there anything they can't do? :P )

I knew that disbanding a unit would make the title available again, but sometimes that seems like a bit of a waste, so the emissary would be a much better idea. That's all I needed, thanks again!

Actually there's many ways to get rid of a general you don't like...assassinate him, use an inquisitor to burn him for heresy, or drop a spy on him and get him done for treason! But, all of these are quite risky and can be time-consuming (and of course you need to tech up a bit), and are best reserved for 'training' the relevant espionage unit, or when you need to get rid of a very powerful general who might rebel if you just strip him of his title. For crappy peasant governors, the emissary/disband works fine...:2cents:

Interesting! Since I haven't played long enough to get to Inquisitors or spies: does killing the general with either of these leave the general's unit 'intact', or does it lose valor or morale when their beloved leader turns out to be a backstabbing heretic?

I am not the best person to answer this definitively. But, as I understand it, unit valour is the average valour of every man in it, each man in the unit having individual valour which the computer keeps track of. So removing the leader might affect the unit's valour slightly, but probably not a lot. The effect of any Vices or Virtues he has will be lost though, so if he had morale-boosting Virtues the unit will have lower morale than before. The next unit leader will be selected (probably, I can't say for sure) at random, and might therefore be randomly loyal or not.
This is not the case if a general dies of old age...his successor will (in the un-modded version, anyway) be identical except in name.

If your spy or assassin fails the unit leader will become suspicious that you're trying to have him bumped off or framed, and may become understandably more disloyal...! If the inquisitor fails the general may get religious virtues of one sort or another, and may even become a heretic (whic makes him easier to burn next time)!
