Against most odds, the Liberal Democrats have gained themselves another seat in the House of Commons, and they now represent the Dunfermline and West Fife constituency, in which the Chancellor of the Exchequer lives and his seat is neighbouring.
The Results:
Willie Rennie (Lib Dem) -12,391 (up 5000)
Catherine Stihler (Lab) -10,591 (down 10000)
Douglas Chapman (SNP) -7,261 (down 800)
Carrie Ruxton (Cons) -2,702 (down 1500)
John McAllion (SSP) -537 (down 150)
James Hargreaves (SCP) -411
Thomas Minogue (AFBTP) -374
Ian Borland (UKIP) -208 (down 400)
Dick Rodgers (CG) -103
The SNP were dismayed, since they were confident that they would beat the Lib Dems here... if the trend continues throughour the year then they may see losses in the 2007 Scottish Parliament elections.
Admittedly, the election was fought over more local issues, such as the Forth Road Bridge tolls (the Scottish Executive wants to increase them) for which there was an entire party (3rd from the bottom). It is always nice to see the Socialists lose votes, since they have trouble with basic arithmetic when it comes to Manifesto writing... The Conservatives never do well, mainly because of Margaret Thatcher and the concept of it being an English party and such...
